“There could be another reason.”

“I know, but it’s all we’ve got to go on at the moment, and I need to protect my officers.”

“Don’t kick me off this case.”

“You can still be on the case, but you’re grounded.”

“What does that mean?”

The DI gestured to the window. “Your role on the case will stay in the incident room. When you arrive in the morning, this is where you will stay until your shift is over. A security detail will be posted to your home address and I’d advise no unnecessary journeys.”

“Absolutely not!”

“Chad…”

“If the killer wanted me, he would’ve come after me by now. I’m not in danger, and I don’t want a police car outside my house. It’s an invasion of privacy.”

“It’s a good idea.”

“No.” Chad stepped up to the desk. “I’ll accept you grounding me, and not being able to leave the station or speak to witnesses or suspects, but no security detail.”

The DI exhaled through his nose, then nodded. “Okay…”

“Okay.” Chad agreed, backing away.

“Don’t take it out on Ally.”

“What?”

“She’s looking out for you.”

“Can I go?”

The DI gave him a dismissive nod, and Chad stalked out of the office, pointedly not looking towards Ally.

“You good?” Josh asked, handing the coffee back.

“I’m great,” he took a sip of coffee. “Considering I’ve been stabbed in the back.”

“What’s happened?”

“I’ve been grounded, Josh. I can’t leave the station during working hours.”

“Why?”

“Because I have brown hair, and Tate has blond hair.”

“I don’t understand.”

Ally got to her feet. “Let’s talk about this outside.”

“I hope you mean outside the door because I’m not allowed to gooutsidethanks to you.”

Ally tutted and pushed on the double doors to the incident room. Josh took the coffee from Chad’s hand, and Chad hurried after her.

They faced off in the stairwell.

“You tried to get me removed from the case.”
