The DI pointed to the handcuffs securing one of Josh’s wrists to the bed. Olivia hurried over to release him, giggling.

“Where’s your phone?” Ally asked.

Josh rubbed his wrist, but made no move to stand with the sheet covering his lap and what remained of his dignity. “Downstairs.”

“I didn’t mean to cause any trouble,” Olivia said, slipping the fluffy handcuffs into her beside cabinet. “It was only a bit of fun.”

The DI turned his back on her and faced Chad. His expression of cold fury had Chad pressing into the wall, wishing he could vanish through it. “Get back to the station. Now.”

Josh made a sound of protest from behind the DI, but Chad bowed his head in acceptance. He hurried out of the room with Ally quick to follow, and ignored Josh’s shout of his name.

Chapter Thirteen

Chad pressed his teeth together as he winced.

“What the hell were you thinking!”

The DI’s shout left his ears ringing.

With the adrenaline gone, Chad struggled to string a thought together. He didn’t think the DI wanted an answer, he wanted to yell and curse them out, and Chad was happy to sit there and take it, but Josh thought the long pauses between shouts were for them to fill.

“It was my idea.”

“I don’t care which of you came up with this stupid plan. You shouldn’t have been there.”

Josh leaned towards the DI’s desk. “I thought if we could get—”

“I know what you thought.” The DI snapped. “What if you’d been photographed?”

“We weren’t.”

“You better hope to God there are no pictures of you two. You’ll be looking at dismissal if there is.”

Chad’s gut lurched. He closed his eyes at the sudden wave of nausea.

“No one saw us. We were wearing masks.”

“Olivia Jones saw you, Josh!” The DI turned away. “I’ve got no choice but to suspend you both.”

“Suspension?” Chad gasped.

“Yes. I’ve already brought in two officers to replace you on the case. Go home.”

Chad heaved himself up in a daze, and only breathed once he and Josh were out of the incident room and in the stairwell.

“Well, that’s shit.” Josh said. He looked Chad up and down. “Did you really think I’d been dragged off by Olivia? I mean…” he flexed his arm, and squeezed it, “Come on…”

He grinned, flashing his teeth, but Chad couldn’t force up a smile. He sighed, and Josh lowered his arm.

“What?” Josh asked.

“You know I’ve been taken by two serial killers, right?”

Josh’s foot slipped on the step. He grabbed the handrail and looked up at Chad with wide eyes.

“Of course, I know—”

“One time I was knocked unconscious with a rock. The other time I had a needle shoved in my neck and I couldn’t move.”
