Thank god for sports bras, or I’d be topless right now. Xav turns, dropping the sweater. I see his hand slip into the pocket of his sweater and I pale as I see the glint of metal.

“Gun,” I scream, and every agent in the room pulls one in response.

My chest heaves as I walk forward, wanting to stop him, yet terrified that he’ll shoot me. The warehouse is freezing, and my skin pebbles in goose flesh. I’m aware of all of this, and yet at the same time, hyper aware as things slow down.

An agent tries to tackle him, and instead grapples with Xav until he finds himself held tightly against Xav with the gun against his temple.

“None of you are actual police officers,” Xav says as he steps back. I watch him, praying he won’t kill an agent assigned to protect me.

I know that’s a risk they take, but my life isn’t worth theirs.

“Please,” I whisper, taking another step forward. All it would take is a word, and I wait for Xav to use it.

Fuck…

“Len, don’t get any closer,” Derek barks and I nod, stopping where I am.

“You’re a well-trained dog, Miss Lennon, aren’t you?” Xav taunts me, and I grip my knife hard.

I should have asked for knife throwing lessons, because I really want to see his blood on my blade. He’s too damn far.

I don’t bother to respond to him, even as the blood on my face begins to dry.

“I don’t want anyone hurt,” I insist instead, watching as he takes another step back. There’s a side door he’s inching closer to and my eyes track him every step of the way.

The agent’s in the way, unless his crew is planning to shoot through him, no one has a shot. I take another small step, as if it’ll help to keep him in sight.

I feel the heat of someone’s body behind me, and stiffen. “It’s just me, little girl,” Orion grunts behind me and I force myself not to sag in relief.

“It was really good seeing you…” Xav murmurs, and the room spins around me as I watch him shoot the agent in the head before throwing himself out the door.

My body contracts in a silent sob as one person runs to the dead agent, and the rest run out the door.

Orion stays with me, wrapping his arm around me to hold me up. “Not your fault,” he whispers in my ear.

“How do you know?” I gasp, my hand gripping the arm holding me.

“Because you care about people you’ve never met before. You’re a really good fucking person, baby,” he croons in my ear.

Orion doesn’t care that he may be getting blood on him, he just holds me as the agents come back empty handed. My heart sinks, and I still, Orion just kisses my temple.

“He’ll need to find another supplier for his forgeries, Lennon. I didn’t send him shit, though I took his money,” he tells me.

I can’t bring myself to smile, though I appreciate his deviousness.

“Lenny?” Greg says, walking my way, barely glancing at the doctor behind me.

“I’m so sorry,” I whisper, and he shakes his head grimly.

“You didn’t pull the trigger. You didn’t do a damn thing except kill one of the fuckers on my kill list, so really I should be thanking you. Is any of that blood yours?” he asks, and I shake my head.

Realizing I’m only standing in my bra and leggings, I shiver.

“Why are you half-naked, Lennon?” Orion growls and I shake my head.

Taking a shaky breath I tell them, “Dr. Bennett found my knife because his hand went up my sweatshirt. They kept petting me, as if I belonged to them.”

Eyes begin to move in my direction, and Derek walks towards me. His eyes move over me before he’s taking his bullet proof vest off and then his shirt. Derek pulls his shirt off with one hand, slipping it up and over my head. I push my arms in, sighing in relief because it’s long-sleeved and hits me mid-thigh with how tall he is.
