I frown. I shouldn’t think of her like that. It’s fun to irritate her and play with her but I can’t get serious about this girl. She’s not the girl you take home to mother. If you still have a mother. I don’t have any family left. It’s just me.

I don’t know why I can’t stay away from this woman but her eyes haunt my mind. They have since the first time I saw her image.

The pale green color glows in her lightly-tanned face. Her long, wild, chestnut hair flies around her head. My hands want to bury themselves in it and see if it’s as silky-soft as it looks. Yank her head back and kiss her until all that fire and fury is directed right at me. Until she can’t pretend anymore that there’s nothing here.

But I can’t do that. I want a wife. A family. And this girl has runner written all over her. I’d give anything to change that because I feel like I’m already half in love with her.

Case in point. As she takes off running, I smile and take my time following her. I made sure that none of the cars that were there would take off without me. Just because she thought I was an idiot didn’t mean I was.

She challenged me. And I never back down from a challenge.

She knows it too. After two of the cars’ drivers nod towards me walking towards them, I see her shoulders drop and she sighs, huffing a breath out that puffs up her hair.

When I reach her, she glares at me with those pale green eyes. “You really gave all of them fifty bucks not to leave? Didn’t you trust me?”

Laughing, I stroll up and hand out the fifties to the drivers holding out their hands. “Should I have? You forget, princess. You challenged me. I’m not one to back down from a challenge.”

“I didn’t challenge you for goodness sake.”

“You did. You said I couldn’t handle your little trip. I got this. I was a sniper in the military, sweetheart. I can handle a helluva lot more than you can dish out.”

The mutinous look on her face slips off and I curse myself under my breath. Why the hell did I say that?

“You were a sniper?” She asks. I can practically see her wheels turning. There’s no way I want to talk about what I did in the military.

“Let it go, princess. I don’t want to talk about it. Let’s go do your work thing.”

“It’s zip lining,” she grumbles.

“Yes and I’m very excited about this. Been looking forward to it.” I nod at one of the drivers and he opens the back door on his little compact to let Raven in. She slides in and I try not to look at her lush ass when she bends over. It’s hard to miss but when my dick jerks I look away.

I need to focus on the zip lining. It’s been awhile since I’ve done anything like this. I’ve been holed up in my house in Hallow Falls since I left the military. Since the worst day of my career. The day my best friend walked into an ambush and died. Marcus and I both struggled with Doug’s loss.

That day is burned into my heart like a fucking brand. And nothing is ever going to scrape it off.

But today is about doing something to take my ever-loving mind off of my damn mess of a life.

I smirk at her. “I can’t wait to see how you react to this! I’m sure we’re gonna have a great time. As long as you’re not scared.” I can’t help it. I gotta mess with her. “I hear it’s really high over those trees. And you can go hands-free! That’s what I’m doing. I’m going to look just like superman.”

She grimaces and I swear her golden tan pales just a little bit. “That sounds so…fun. Can’t wait.”

“You’re not nervous about heights are you, princess?”

She shakes her head wildly and the ponytail that she pulled her crazy curls up into whips my face. “I’m not scared of anything.”

“Good.”

“Good,” she huffs and flops back into the seat as I slide in with her. The door closes and I’m shut in with her again. And this time I know what her soft skin feels like under my lips. The video that I watched over and over again plays in my head while I study her.

Lord, she’s fucking beautiful. I scramble, trying to figure out what to say but my tongue feels like it’s stuck to the roof of my mouth. I can see her large breasts rising and falling quickly. Can smell the sweet, spicy cinnamon scent she wears. It’s like that red-hot candy I used to love as a kid. There are goosebumps on her arm where the air conditioning in the car is blowing.

This guy has it set so high that I’m surprised he doesn’t have icicles dangling off the rearview mirror.

“You alright?” I ask her, studying her closely. She seems distracted. Worried.

“I’m okay.” But I can hear the tremble in her husky voice and it does things to me. I want to take care of her, hold her close and make sure that she’s safe and protected.

If I did that, I think she’d knee me in the balls though.
