“Is he totally selfish in bed?”

I hesitated. “I wouldn’t say that.” I’d definitely been with guys like the type she was talking about—guys who made it feel as if it was all about their pleasure, and I was only there to be of service to them. It hadn’t felt that way at all with Jake. The experience had felt surprisingly mutual. Maybe it had to do with how he had kept talking to me the entire time—not every guy did that…

“Well, I wouldn’t mind hooking up with him,” Tanya said. “It’s not like I have to keep things aboveboard and professional. It’s okay if we stop being able to be around each other.”

I laughed. “I guess you’re right about that. I’m the one who has to maintain a working relationship. You could fall out with him all you wanted.”

“Maybe I’ll look into it.”

We both knew she was kidding. Tanya liked to joke around, but she wasn’t interested in one-night stands. She wouldn’t want to hook up with a guy if there was no future in it. And we both knew that Jake Wallace had never taken a woman seriously in his life—if a relationship was what you wanted, he was exactly the wrong person to seek it from.

As for me, I didn’t mind the odd casual hookup. But I couldn’t help regretting the one with Jake. It was going to make it that much harder to be around him from now on, and that wasn’t good because I needed his help.

I would have a talk with him about it. I would make sure he understood where I was coming from.

After all, now that we’d gotten some distance from the event, I was sure he’d have realized how careless we had been.

There was no way he would want to do it again.

Chapter 5

OLIVIA

Ilaidoutthenew rules for Jake on our way to Michael Sanders’ downtown office, where we would be working on script polish today. A week and a half had gone by since the night we’d spent in the hotel, and I’d seriously been hoping that it would have cooled things down between us.

But that didn’t seem to be the case—being beside him in the car had me feeling hot all over.

“No unnecessary touching,” I said.

“I can’t touch my own wife?” He leered at me.

This was going to be harder than I had thought. “Fuck off with thatmy own wifestuff. I told you, we’re not doing that unless we’re in front of other people.”

“Well, it might be hard for me to remember,” he said. “You wouldn’t want me to mess up and say you’re my friend’s little sister in front of the director, would you?”

I gritted my teeth.

I knew what he was doing. He wasn’t threatening me. Jake wouldn’t do that; he wasn’t that mean. He was teasing me the way he always had. It was the same as how he had held things over my head when we were kids and made me jump to try to get them while he laughed.

He was withholding something he knew I desired because he could and enjoyed watching me squirm for it.

A part of me hated him for that. But I also knew how to deal with it. He wasn’t going to get me worked up as he used to when we were youngsters, and if he did, he was going to learn the hard way.

“You’re going to have to remember it,” I said. “The longer we spend at this job, the more I’m going to be able to prove myself, and the less I’m going to need you.”

“Hey, if you don’t need me, drop me off right now,” he said easily, calling my bluff.

Damn him. He was right. I did still need him, and we both knew it.

And the moment we pulled up in front of the office, I knew the conversation I’d had with him would be the opposite of successful.

He wrapped his arm around my waist as we crossed the parking lot.

I stepped to the side, out of his grip. “Stop that.”

His hand found the small of my back. “Listen,” he said. “If youreallywant me to stop—if you genuinely don’t want me to touch you at all anymore, for the rest of the time we’re doing this—say it one more time. I’ll listen.”

I opened my mouth to insist that that was exactly what I wanted—but something stopped me.
