“You got it.” I began making her drink. “First day here?”

“Yes, it is,” she replied.

“How do you like it so far?”

“Oh my God, it’s beyond words. Everything is so beautiful.”

“Well you fit right in then,” I said with a playful wink.

Her cheeks flushed. “Thank you,” she said softly.

“You wouldn’t happen to be the journalist that everyone is talking about, would you?”

“I am, actually,” she said. “My name is Snow.”

“Snow. What a pretty name,” I said. “I’m Jason.”

“Jason is a nice name.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

I finished making her drink and put an umbrella and a straw in it before handing it off. I was really hoping she might hang out at the bar. It wasn’t fair to keep her all to myself but I wanted to get to know her better.

“I hope you enjoy it. Please, tell me what you think.”

She took a sip and her eyes went wide. “This is really good,” she said.

“Never had one before?”

“No, I typically don’t drink. I don’t really get to go out much back home truth be told, but here’s to trying new things.”

“Here, here,” I said, raising my bottle of water up to her glass.

Snow’s gaze moved toward the entrance to the club and her smile faltered.

“Uh-oh, what is it?” I asked.

A guy had entered the club and was looking around as if searching for someone. He was tall and good-looking, the usual type we would see at the resort. He’d be popular with the guests, but from the look on Snow’s face, he wasn’t very popular with her.

“It’s nothing,” she said under her breath, turning to face me fully now.

“Come here,” I said, motioning for her to follow me. Her expression turned to confusion at first, but she followed me, nonetheless. I moved her to the corner of the bar and placed a plant next to her. Due to how the bar was curved, she was between the wall and the plant, harder to spot.

Laughing, she thanked me. “You picked up on my body language, huh?”

“Something like that,” I said. “As a bartender, I have to look out for my guests. I try to recognize when women are actively trying to avoid a guy and do what I can.”

“You’re a hero,” she said with a smile, sipping her drink.

I kept an eye on the man. As suspected, he was pretty popular. The blonde and brunette from earlier were both at his side, with the blonde rubbing his muscular arm.

“He seems to be distracted now,” I said to Snow.

She glanced behind her, an unexpected mistake. The man’s eyes narrowed in on Snow, and he started toward us.

“Alright, come with me,” I said, moving from behind the bar and escorting Snow through the crowd into a corner booth that was hidden from almost everyone. She slipped into the booth with a laugh.

“Thank you. You don’t have to do this though.”
