“Gage?” Reed’s voice had more weight to it.

“Fine,” he said. “But if he causes any problems, please let me kick his ass to the curb.”

“Absolutely. But here’s hoping there’s no trouble.”

I shuddered, and it wasn’t from the cool ocean breeze. I felt so vulnerable, even surrounded by three of the biggest men I’d ever laid eyes on. I remembered the insidious way Hunter had looked at me and it didn’t leave me with the best feeling.Tomorrow. It’ll be better tomorrow when he’s gone, I told myself.

“Do you want to come inside?” she asked.

I knew my answer should be no, I shouldn’t enter a guest’s cottage. That was their private space.

But after what she’d just experienced, and with everything else that had happened with Hunter, I couldn’t blame her if she didn’t want to be alone.

“Sure,” I said. “I can keep you company for a bit, if you’d like.”

“I’d like that a lot.”

I stepped into her cozy little cottage and closed the door behind me.

“How’s your book coming along?” she asked me as she plopped down on the overstuffed sofa in the living area. She patted the seat next to her with a smile.

“Uh, I haven’t worked on it in months, like I said earlier.”

I slowly walked toward her and joined her on the couch, our legs touching once I sat down. Her warm skin against mine was distracting, making it hard to think about anything else.

“I hoped our conversation would have renewed your interest a bit,” she said.

I laughed. “If only it was a matter of interest. I’ve hit a plot hole and don’t know how to work through it.”

“Well, would you like to use me as a sounding board?”

She pulled a strand of hair over her shoulder and started twirling it between her fingers, as her eyes stayed focused on me. She was almost too beautiful to be real; she felt like a main character in a classical romance. She had such delicate, soft features with cherry red lips and the bluest eyes I’d ever seen. My voice caught in my throat.

“Uh, sure, maybe we could talk about it at some point.” I didn’t like talking about my work. It was often hard to explain my vision to someone else, hard for them to get it. But I had a feeling Snow might be different. She was a writer too, after all.

But I decided to change the subject anyway.

“How’s your piece coming along on this place?”

She let out a laugh as her head rolled back against the couch. “I haven’t even started it.”

“Do you know what direction you want to go with it?”

“Not a freaking clue,” she said, turning her head to look at me again. “But truth be told, I didn’t invite you here to talk about work.”

I felt a small tug at the corner of my mouth. “Oh yeah? So why did you invite me back here?”

“To get to know you better, of course. Not to talk about myself.”

“What if I’d like to get to knowyoubetter?”

She seemed to ponder the question for a moment, nibbling her lower lip as she studied my face.

“What if we could get to know each other without talking at all?” she asked.
