“My pleasure,” Gage growled, taking the man from me.

Snow was sitting on the couch, and that’s when I noticed she was wrapped in a blanket. She looked pissed as all hell, which I couldn’t blame her. I stepped closer to her and asked, “May I?” motioning toward the empty seat on the couch, not wanting to get too close without permission.

She nodded her head and I took a seat. “Are you okay?”

“I’m okay, he didn’t hurt me. I’m just pissed.”

“Did he try to—” I didn’t know how to word it, it was such a sensitive subject, but seeing her partially undressed caused me some concern.

“No, he didn’t try anything like that,” she said. “Not yet at least. I was asleep down here, and already mostly undressed. I’m assuming he had stolen my bracelet when I lost it then snuck in while I was away… he’d been here for quite a while. He heard me and Bash and—”

“And what?”

Snow crossed her arms in front of her chest angrily. “He called me a slut. He heard everything and said I was a whore for sleeping with someone.”

“So he’d been hiding in here?”

“I think he might have been in the closet, the door is open but it was closed before,” Snow said, motioning to the walk-in near the bathroom. “I lost my bracelet earlier and Reed was going to deactivate it, but I suspect he snuck in here before that happened and just waited for me to be alone.”

I frowned and cursed Hunter in my head. The resort was supposed to be a safe place for all our guests; we thought we’d figured out a way to make it so but he found a way around that.

“We’re going to make sure nothing like this ever happens again,” I said. “But in the meantime, I completely understand if you don’t feel safe staying here. I will make sure you’re fully refunded if you choose to leave—”

She stopped me by holding up her hand. “No, I don’t want to leave. With Hunter gone, and with how amazing security is around here, I feel safe now.”

“Gage will make sure he’s gone for good,” I reassured her. “We should probably call the police and report this.”

“I’d rather not,” Snow said. “Even after all this, I still have to work with him, at least until I can find another job—he’s my human resource manager.”

“They can’t legally fire you for this.”

“I know, but let’s just say the person who runs the company is very fond of Hunter, and less so of me. She is capable of doing far worse things than firing me.”

“I don’t understand, your boss still can’t punish you for filing a police report for a break-in.”

“She’s not just my boss, I’m afraid. She’s my stepmother.”

“Oh,” I said.

“Yeah, and right now, she’s in charge of my dad’s company and inherited pretty much everything from him.” She sighed. “Anyway, it’s just more complicated than a typical boss-employee relationship and I’d rather not deal with the cops. I’m in the process of finding a new career and cutting ties with my stepmom, but it’s going to take some time.”

I couldn’t force her to bring in the cops, that was her choice. I didn’t agree with her about it, but I also didn’t know the history between her and her stepmother and I had to respect her wishes.

“You know, someone like Hunter isn’t going to stop just because we kicked him out of here. He’s likely to come after you once you leave.”

“I know that, and I plan on not being caught with my guard down again,” she said.

She held her head up high and seemed so sure of herself. I wanted to believe it too. I knew that she wasn’t some damsel in distress—she was a grown woman who knew her situation better than I did, and I had to trust her.

“Alright then, I’m not going to try to convince you to–”

Before I could finish speaking, there was a knock at the door.

“It’s Reed,” came a voice.

“And Bash.”

“And Sean.”
