Snow

I’d slept on the couch for God knows how long before finally getting up and heading to the bed upstairs. I wasn’t lying when I said the couch was comfortable, but the bed… well, it was pure heaven and I sank into it, unsure if I would ever leave it again.

The sun was already streaming in through the windows, and I was too lazy to get up and close the curtains. I checked the time, it was five to seven in the morning—just about the time I’d normally be getting up for work. I grabbed my phone and scrolled through it for a long time, no longer feeling tired. I saw that Rosie was online and decided that I needed to talk to my best friend.

I sent her a quick message and asked if we could talk on her commute to work. A few minutes later my phone rang and I answered the video call.

Rosie was driving, so not looking at her phone which was situated in a holder on her dash. We’d talked like this a few times before over the years while both of us were on our way to work so we could rant and rave about how badly we didn’t want to go in that day.

“Heyyyy,” she exclaimed. “You’re up early for someone who is supposed to be on vacation. Please tell me it’s because a gorgeous hunk just left your bed.”

Rosie always knew how to make me laugh. “Not even close,” I said. “Well, I mean, I did hookup with some guys yesterday—”

“Guys? Plural?” she glanced at the camera with a raised eyebrow. “Girl, you better tell me all about that.”

I forgot about the Hunter BS briefly and launched into the details of my threesome with Sean and Reed first.

“Wait, you had a threesome with two staff members on your first day there?”

“And another romp that evening. Remember the sexy French writer I told you about?”

“No way! I mean, I called that one from the start, but three different guys in one day? Snow, what has gotten into you? I mean, I love it, but I’m also so freaking jealous right now that I don’t even know what to say.”

I rolled over in the bed, laying on my back and stretching myself out like a starfish while still holding my phone up to where she could see me. The bed was so large and empty, I wished one, or more, of the guys had stayed over with me.

“And, well, things weren’t all peachy,” I said.

“What? Let me guess, Hunter?”

“Yep. He stole my bracelet-slash-room key and snuck into my room. He hid until I was asleep and alone. He said he just wanted to talk, but obviously I wasn’t in the mood for talking after that.”

“Oh my god, are you okay? Did he hurt you? That fucking prick, I always knew he was up to no good—”

“I’m fine. I don’t think he actually wanted to hurt me, I think he meant it when he said he wanted to talk and to force me to listen to him, but breaking into my room and insulting me isn’t the way to go about it.”

“He insulted you too?”

I told her all about what he’d said to me, and she was fuming. Her face was literally red as she cursed his very existence.

“Next time I see him, if I ever see him again, I’m going to give him a piece of my mind right before I kill him. Did the cops arrest him?”

“I didn’t call the cops,” I said. “I was afraid it might cause problems with Hilda, and even though I want to ditch this job, I can’t afford to be jobless, or worse, deal with her treating me even more horrible than she already does as retribution. You know she falls over herself for Hunter.”

“Snow, I think you really should have gotten the police involved.”

“Maybe, but it’s not a big deal. He was removed from the resort and—”

“Honey, it sounds like you’re really downplaying what happened to you. What’s going to happen when you’re back here?”

“I’m going to be more careful. Here’s hoping I can find another job quickly and be out of there asap.”

Rosie was quiet, and I knew that I couldn’t make her see that I was trying to avoid trouble for not only me, but her as well. Hilda knew she was my best friend, that we’d been friends forever and I was the one who got her the job at the company in the first place. Hilda would make her life hell as revenge, especially if I left. Rosie was also looking for a new job, but we both needed to look even harder.

Or, better yet, I needed to get my writing career started. I hadn’t checked my email in a bit. I was hoping that when I did, I’d find a favorable response about my article. That, and I needed to start the damned thing at some point.
