There were a lot of “hopefully this works” said in our planning, but it was the best we could do. We had to save her. Not a single one of us could handle losing her. Reed was by my side and I never knew him to be so quiet; he did everything I told him and he was more serious than I’d ever seen. I knew he’d suffered loss before, and the idea of losing someone else he cared for weighed heavily on my friend’s shoulders.

We might not have been prepared, but we were not lacking in desire and willingness to do everything we could to save Snow. I had not intended to fall in love, but it was too late for that now, and I knew my friends felt the same way.

“Let’s save our girl,” Reed whispered as we stepped into the office.

Our girl. She wasourgirl. Our princess.

Anthony sniffled behind me and I shot a look in his direction. He mouthed, “I’m okay.”

“You better be,” I mouthed back.

He’d stopped sneezing as much once we left Snow’s apartment. He said he used a nasal spray that would help. It damned well better. I had told him to stay back, but there was no way he was going to do that while our girl was in danger, and I couldn’t blame him. But his sneezing was cause for concern; we had to stay quiet.

The receptionist desk was in front of us as we entered and beyond that was the main area, where there were a bunch of cubicles. Hunter’s office was on the other side, around a corner. The place was dark and silent besides a hum of electricity in the air, but otherwise, not a sound could be heard, not even from his office.

Shit. He’d better still be in there and not have found a way to get around us. Most importantly, Snow better be okay.

We had to walk quietly, careful with each move not to step too loudly or knock something over. Thankfully, it was a pretty straight shot until we got to the end of the cubicles, when we had to round a corner and head down a hallway to where Hunter’s office was located. The service entrance was not far from his office door, he could make a run for it if he heard us.

We approached the corner slowly, and I prayed that Sean and Doc were waiting in the corridor of the service entrance as instructed.Unless Hunter found them first.I shook the thought from my head, Doc and Sean could easily take him in a fight. The only concern was we had no idea whether or not Hunter had a weapon.

Anthony started breathing heavier and wheezing. I turned on my heels and was about to point for him to hurry and leave, but it was too late. He was trying to fight it, but he let out a sneeze that could be heard for miles. And more followed as he hastily tried to back away. A loud noise from down the hallway caught my attention, the sound of a door opening and slamming shut.

Fuck. So much for sneaking up on him.

The ropes around my wrists were getting looser, finally. I kept twisting and twisting my hands, until they were nearly free, but I would need to act quickly. He needed to be distracted and I needed a weapon.

I looked around the room, to no avail. I couldn’t get to the letter opener in the drawer quick enough. My gaze fell on my shoes. High heels. It’s a good thing I had tried to dress to impress Hilda; I rarely wore stilettos but thank God I did. It might not work, but it was the best chance I had.

Hunter was pacing the room. “I think we can probably head out soon—”

His words were punctuated with a noise from outside the office.

“Was that a sneeze?” he asked, perplexed.

Then another and another.

“Shit,” he grumbled, hurrying toward the door. With Hunter distracted, I pulled my hands free and reached for my heel. I slipped it from my foot, took off the other one leaving it on the floor and lunged toward Hunter’s back.

He must have heard me because he turned around and grabbed my wrist, squeezing it tightly and staring me in the eyes. Anger flooded his gaze. If his eyes could have glowed red in that moment, they would have. I had never seen him look at me that way before, it was pure hatred. His obsession with me had turned to something much more sinister.

“Drop the heel,” he growled.

“No,” I said.

“Drop it or I will break your fucking wrist and force you to drop it,” he said.

I wasn’t going to give up that easily. I kept a firm hold on the stiletto, I knew it was my only chance. While he was focused on the heel in my hand, I raised my knee up, aiming for his groin. I put as much force as possible into the movement. As my knee made contact, Hunter dropped my wrist, his face twisting into an expression of agony and he let out a groan of pain.

I made a dash for the door. If someone was sneezing in the office, it meant we weren’t alone. I opened the door and rushed out, yelling, “Help!”

Hunter was right behind me, grabbing me by the waist. Something pressed into my neck. From the limited view I had, I figured it had to be the letter opener—the very thing I had hoped would save me earlier could end up being my own demise.

“Shut up, or you will die.” Hunter hissed.
