I follow her inside and she sits on the toilet. “It’s okay,” I tell her. “I’m clean.”

“You’re clean. Good to know,” she says sarcastically.

“Are you? Clean?” I ask her.

“Are you serious?” She scrunches a wad of toilet paper and wipes herself before flushing. “You are the second man I’ve ever slept with. Am I clean? Of course I am!” she hisses in my direction.

“Okay, then we’re good.”

“We’re not good. I’m not on birth control, damn it,” she says.

My eyes widen. Fuck. I didn’t even consider that. The first thing that came to mind was fucking diseases, not babies.

“I’ll take you to get the morning after pill tomorrow,” I tell her,

“Well, gee, thanks for that.”

“Look, whatever’s done is done. We’ll deal with it like the adults we are. There’s no need to freak out.”

“You’re right. It’s going to be fine. I cannot be that unlucky, right?”

“It’d be unlucky to have my child?”

“No. Well, yes. It would be unlucky for me to get impregnated by my boss. By someone I don’t even know.”

“Well, let’s get to know each other then—although you’re not going to be pregnant. The morning after pill is just as effective as a condom,” I tell her.

I take her hand and lead her back to the bed. Where I lie down and tug her beside me, before pulling the blanket over the both of us. This is different, having a woman in my arms, post-sex cuddling. But I like it.

“I don’t know how you’re so calm about this,” she whispers.

“I’ve learnt that there is no point in worrying about what might be. You worry when there is something to worry about.”

“So, if I do end up pregnant, that’s when you’ll worry?” she asks me.

“Yes. I’m not cut out to be a father. Doing what we do at the firm, I’ve seen far too many children affected by the choices of adults. I don’t want to do that to anyone.”

“You know not all stories end badly,” she says.

“I’ve yet to see one that ends happily.”

“That’s because you’re a divorce lawyer. Maybe you should have become a celebrant if you wanted the happy stories. Be the person hosting peoples’ fiftieth anniversaries. That’s where you’ll see true love.”

“Perhaps,” I say, running my hands up and down her back.

I wait until Dani falls asleep to climb out of bed. Retrieving the bracelet from my pants pocket, I clasp it around her right wrist. Then slide back in behind her, wrap my arms around her waist, and let myself drift off to sleep.

SEVEN

Idid it again. I woke up early and snuck out of Alistair’s apartment. I shouldn’t have been there in the first place. But, let’s be honest, if you were me, you wouldn’t have turned down that man either.

Unlocking my door, I walk in and flick on the lights. “Argh, turn it off,” Daisy calls out from my sofa.

“What are you doing here?” I ask her.

“Waiting for you.” She sits up and looks at me. “Doing the walk of shame again?”

“Yes.” I sigh and fall into the sofa cushions.
