“I need – Winnie needs her dog lessons.”

“We will find new lessons for you.”

“NO!”

Rarely do I shout. In fact... never.

Never have I ever shouted at Jason. I can tell he’s shocked because he says nothing, going completely still.

Not even blinking.

A surge of power runs through me, like a thrill I didn’t know possible.

“Princess,” he says softly.

My eyes fill with tears. “I need this. Winnie needs this. Please, Jason. Please let me stay in the dog obedience class. It was so nice to talk to other owners. To be with people who appreciate dogs. Who enjoy talking about them. The energy was so positive.”

“You know I -- ”

“I know you have the power to decide where I live.”

Jason’s speckled eyebrows knit together. “I don’t have as much power as you think.”

“You know you decide. And you can move me wherever you like. You can fool me. I don’t need to know where we end up, but I need that class.”

“What’s so special about it?”

“The instructor,” I lie. “It’s the last place where I felt good. My future husband doesn’t want a depressed wife, right?”

“Depressed?”

“Depression.”

“You’ve never been depressed.”

“I can feel it coming on. And if it gets bad, people take medication.”

He jolts. “You’re not allowed.”

“Then which will it be? Give humanity a compromised princess? One who is depressed, or who is impure because of medication? Come on. Please. I’m lonely, Jason,” I whine, sniffing, mind full of Cam and knowing I have to fool my bodyguard. “So lonely. Rudy was inappropriate but he was good company to talk to.”

“You can talk to me and Malcolm.”

“Winnie deserves that class.”

Frowning, he considers my words, giving Malcolm covert glances.

Then he nods, exactly once.

Malcolm grabs my packed bag and the two of them flank me as we go to the front door. Bending down, I pick up Winnie and cradle her in my arms.

Then we leave. I still don't know where I'm going.

"You'll be safer where we're headed," Malcolm mutters as I climb in.

"Was I unsafe here?" I challenge. His eyes cast down but he does not reply.

Winnie and I are in the back of our SUV. Jason, my shadow, is in the driver's seat. Malcolm rides shotgun, with a duffel bag of clothes and shoes in his lap.
