They are all around me, watching me, waiting for me.

And then suddenly, Cam is there. Tall and strong, he inserts himself between me and the men.

For years, I’ve worried about the men in society who want me. The ones I’ve been warned about. How they crave me, need me, want to defile me, take a piece of me for themselves.

My heart races at the thought, body cringing, the disgust pouring through my bloodstream. I am not an object for them to meet their vulgar, base desires.

I am so much more.

In my vision, Cam’s arm goes behind him, his hand on my waist, the touch like fire.

“Leave her alone!” he shouts. “She is mine!”

The word mine rings like a gong through my bones.

Oh, how I want to be his. His and only his.

Why can’t he be my husband?

I shake my head and blink. The men are gone, but they are always there.

Cam, though – Cam is only back where we’ve just left. I will never see him again. I have no choice. No agency. No freedom.

Suddenly, the prophecy feels like a curse.

I let out a moan, full of fear and endless suffering. When will I stop being afraid of what I do not understand?

Jason's voice is low and reassuring. "Princess? You've always been brave. You will be brave now."

He reads my mind. It unnerves me.

"Why me?" I ask, my voice a rough whisper.

"You want to save the world, don't you?"

"Yes."

"And to do that, you must wed properly."

"Yes."

"You know this already, don't you?"

"Yes."

"Then you will do this."

"Of course."

Sinking into my seat, Winnie settled on my lap, I close my eyes again. It's quiet after that, the sound of the plane's engines filling the space.

I see Cam in my mind’s eye. His arms strong and wrapped around me, his face coming close for a kiss.

Oh, to touch his lips.

Oh, to be held in his arms.

Oh, to be wanted by him.
