I square my shoulders and capture his gaze.
“You are making very dangerous assumptions about me. Please leave.”
My body is screaming for him to stay, though.
“You’re lying. You want me to stay.”
“Go.”
“I’ll get going, but let me say this: you can always turn to me for help. Always. Do you have a cell phone?”
I sigh. “Yes.”
“Let me guess. It’s monitored.”
I glare at him, trying to cover my surprise. How does he know?
“What kind?” he snaps.
I tell him the manufacturer. He nods.
“Why?”
“Are you going to dog obedience classes again? Out here?” Cam steps back and begins to jog in place, as if our standoff has not happened.
“I am trying.”
“Keep trying. Do anything to get out into public. I’ll find you again. We’ll see each other soon. Who are the men who guard you?”
“Princess?” I hear Jason’s voice, muffled and confused, from inside the house.
“GO!” I urge Cam, who looks at the house like he wants to murder it and steal me away.
“Who are you? Why do they call you Princess?” he asks, but starts to jog a few feet, eyes piercing my soul, demanding that I submit to him.
“I am Paigelynn,” I reply. “Please. It has to be this way. Go, Cam. Go!”
Finally, he does as I ask just as I hear someone coming down the steps inside. Pivoting instantly, I run through the front door, closing it as I hear a man painting, as if out of breath.
“Princess?”
It’s Jason, coming quickly into the room, so fast there’s no way for me to move away from the window and redirect him from it.
He looks out and frowns. “You were outside?”
“I needed some fresh air.”
His eyebrows rise, then his gaze cuts to the window, peering outside.
“Who’s that?”
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Cam, moving out of my sight. It’s as if all of the oxygen in the air has been sucked away, yet again.
“Some neighbor,” I say as casually as possible, but even I hear the shake in my voice.
Jason’s look is sharp. “Did he talk to you?”
I cannot lie. The cameras will show everything. At least they don’t capture audio well.
