“I have never lied to you,” he continues, but a ringing fills my head, a high-pitched hum that makes it hard to stay sharp. He’s lying now. I feel it. Sense it, like the moments before a sudden storm causes a deluge, when you can feel it in the air like energy.

Jason is lying.

Which means I must lie, too.

When two people are in conflict and one of them lies, you have no leverage by staying with the truth. No one has taught me this lesson. It’s just instinct.

All that I am is instinct now.

Because who I am is in question.

“I know that every word you speak is your truth,” I say to him, surprised when his eyes narrow.

“It is the truth.”

“Only the King and Queen speak the truth, Jason,” I retort, my voice low and, dare I say – deadly.

He bows his head, as he should. “Of course, Princess.”

So now we’re back to Princess. He is playing a dangerous game.

But then he surprises me.

“You want more freedom?”

“I want privacy.”

“I cannot give you that, but I can give you more freedom. In fact, we have been given orders to do so.”

“What kind?”

“The dog.”

“Winnie?”

“We have orders to allow you to walk her. Alone.”

“ALONE?”

“We’ll be watching. And a trainer has been hired.”

My heart leaps. “Trainer?”

“That dog obedience school you had Winnie in, back in the old house? We can’t do that here. Too dangerous. So you’re allowed to walk her once a day for thirty minutes, with the trainer.”

“When do we start?”

“Tomorrow. At eight.”

“Tomorrow?”

He chuckles, softly. “You leave us in a week, Princess. Should we delay it?”

“NO!”

“You always liked your walks with Rudy. We’re trying our best. Malcolm’s just doing his job.” Jason gets very uncomfortable suddenly. “As for the privacy stuff -- ”

“I understand.” Backing off is a strategic decision. Suddenly, the thought of freedom to walk around the neighborhood shows me there is a possible option with Cam. If he goes running again tomorrow night...
