“Because you will be The Queen,” Jason says.

Is Malcolm smirking?

“Yes,” I say, agreeing with Jason, playing along. “But I have never been a queen before. The transition is daunting. The Mother said she would always be available for any questions or concerns I have. I wish to initiate a meeting.”

“You will see her at your wedding,” Malcolm says, earning a sharp glare from Jason.

Why would that need to be kept from me?

“You want The Mother, not your own mother, correct?” Jason clarifies.

Malcolm’s face changes, as if he’s just understood something new.

“Yes.”

“She is occupied right now,” Jason says, so smoothly I know he’s lying. “And,” he adds, pressing his earpiece, “the new trainer is on his way.”

“On his way?” My fleeting idea to help Cam save me is to leave a note under a planter outside, telling him to pretend to be a dog obedience expert. As seconds tick past, I see how futile my sad little plan really is.

“Yes. Ten minute ETA.”

“Ten minutes? It’s the middle of the night!”

Jason looks at his phone and turns it toward me. “It is seven fifty-three a.m., Princess. Trainer comes sharply at eight.”

“Eight? I thought he was coming tonight at eight.”

“No,” Jason grunts, avoiding my eyes. “Morning.”

“I need to eat. To shower. To get Winnie ready.” Shooing them out, I am relieved to find that they comply, leaving me alone.

Leaving me panting, back against the door.

Whoever this new trainer is, I will use him to get more freedom. Cam’s words float in my mind:

Do anything to get out into public. I’ll find you again. We’ll see each other soon.

All I can do now is try.

And hope Cam knows what he is doing.

Chapter Ten

What the hell am I doing?

Lying. That’s what I’m doing.

Nothing but lying.

Our first night at the apartment sucked, not only because Newman snores like he personally invented the saw, but because I couldn’t sleep. All I could think about all night was the need for a plan.

And how limited my options are.

At four a.m., I went into the work room and decided to do some research, the kind that involves daisy-chaining together three encrypted VPNs and two dark web networks to cover my tracks.
