“That was never our world, Delaney.”

“Wasn’t it? I remember a time not so long ago I cared deeply about you,” she adds.

“And that’s all over now, isn’t it?”

“It has been for a long time. You killed my best friend,” she whispers.

“With good reason,” I tell her. She looks at me as if I’ve lost my mind, but I haven’t. I heard what he said about her, what he planned on doing to her, and there was no way I would let that happen.

“What could possibly be the reason, Luka?” she snaps at me as she tugs at her hair.

“You really want to do this now?” I ask her.

“Yes, I do.” She takes a seat on the chair in the room and glares at me.

“He wasn’t who you thought he was, Delaney.”

“Who was he then?”

“He was a user, only using you to get close to your father. This marriage, he wanted it to be his. All he wanted was what your father had. He was useless,” I tell her.

“You don’t know that,” she snaps at me.

“I do know that. I was there when he was discussing business with your father. I was never going to let that happen,” I tell her. She looks confused for a minute, but it all makes sense. He wanted what wasn’t his to have, much like my brother.

“I can’t marry Romano. I don’t love him,” she says to me. I know she doesn’t, and that’s just part of the fucked up reality of our life.

“You have no choice in the matter, Delaney.”

“I have every choice,” I yells at me. I stalk toward her now, ripping her out of the chair so she’s standing in front of me. I grip her arm so tightly it’ll probably leave a mark, and I can’t seem to care.

“You will marry him. You don’t have a choice. Think about it. What would my father do to you if you didn’t marry him? Hmm? What would your father do?” I hiss. Her eyes widen as she shakes her head. She’s about to say something more when I roughly grab her face between my fingers.

“You don’t know because they wouldn’t right out tell you, but you will be dead in the end, Delaney. You know this, and I know this, so let’s just make it easier on everyone, shall we? Walk down the fucking aisle like a good little mafia princess.” She starts to shake her head as tears fill her eyes. I know she doesn’t want to do this.

“I can’t.”

“You can and you will. Do you understand me? I’m a sick son of a bitch, but I will not see you dead, Delaney.” That came out more as an order than anything else. Her eyes dance between mine even as tears slide down her cheeks now. I want to kiss them away. I want to lick each one, but this isn’t the time of the place. This isn’t what I’m here for, not now.

“Why do you care?” she asks softly.

“Because you’ve always been mine, Delaney. And that isn’t going to change just because you have a little tantrum.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means walk down the goddamn aisle, Delaney. It means fucking smile when he pulls that veil over your head. Do your part, and don’t piss me off,” I tell her, keeping a grip on her face. I see her wince, but my anger is getting the best of me. She has to do this. She has to go through with this for my plan to work.

“Fine.”

“What?”

“I said fine. If this is what everyone wants, I will do it.” I release her face, noting the marks left on her skin. I like seeing my marks on her.

“Good. Now get ready,” I demand. I don’t bother to look back as I stalk toward the door and head back out to take my place.

I walk down the aisle and stand next to my brother as he smiles at everyone when my father walks up.

“She ready?”
