Idon’t like when things are silent. It usually means someone is planning something, and that someone is usually me. Margetti did as he said and got me more soldiers to watch out for Delaney. The extra men he supplied now surround the house and the grounds. I won’t take any chances with her life.

“I hate this. Being inside all the time,” Delaney complains.

“I know you do, but it has to be this way for now,” I remind her. I don’t like this any more than she does, but this is what we have to do.

“Are you sure this is all necessary?”

“It is in order to keep you safe, Delaney.” Just as the words leave my mouth, something explodes, shaking the entire house. Delaney and I share a glance before I move. I grab her hand, rush toward the bedroom, and shove her into the closet.

“Panic room. Now!” I order her. She shoves the clothes in the closet aside and keys in the code as I watch the doors slide open. My heart is pounding against my ribs as I pull my phone out and pull up the security footage. Outside I can see smoke and debris but can’t tell where it came from. Instead of going inside with Delaney, I watch her step in.

“Stay here until I come for you,” I tell her.

“What? Luka, no. You have to come with me,” she cries in a panic.

“I need to see what’s going on. Just go downstairs, and everything will be fine,” I reassure her. She finally nods, and I key in the code to close the doors, but not before kissing her one last time. I press my lips to hers roughly and kiss the hell out of the woman before pulling away and watching the doors slide closed. I breathe a sigh of relief that at least she’s protected before I hear Angel, one of the guards calling for me.

I rush out of the closet and meet Angel in the bedroom.

“Someone set a bomb. It had to be an inside job, Luka. There was no way anyone got through our line of defense,” he says.

“A bomb?”

“Yes. We’re looking at all aspects now, and I have a guy coming in who specializes in bombs to take a look,” he says quickly.

“No one got inside?” I ask, making sure no one breached the house.

“No, sir. But I think you should stay in the panic room until further notice,” he tells me. I nod my head and run my hand through my hair.

“Check in with me, Angel. I want to know everything,” I tell him. He nods as I enter the closet and key in the code. Then I step inside, lock the doors, and wait for them to slide closed. I sigh, knowing no one got inside. Thank god for small miracles, but we always have someone working for my father in the house.

I walk down the stairs and find Delaney sitting on the small sofa at the bottom. This panic room is actually like a bunker of sorts. It’s like a small apartment underground I keep fully stocked for such purposes.

“It was a bomb,” I say as she lifts her head and looks at me.

“A bomb? Who would do that?”

“I’m sure it was my father, but Angel has men looking into it. Someone here is working with him,” I tell her as I walk over and sit next to her.

“This is insane,” she whispers.

“This is the mafia,” I remind her. She nods and leans over, resting her head on my shoulder.

“We’re safe in here, right?”

“No one can get in here, Delaney. You’re safe.”

“I was talking about you too, Luka.”

“We’re going to be fine,” I tell her. She keeps her head on my shoulder as I pull up the feeds on my phone. I can see the men working, doing what needs to be done. They’ll get someone to clean up the mess and assess the situation.

I drop the phone onto the couch next to me and shift in my seat.

“You need a distraction?” she asks, lifting her head to look at me.

“Are you offering one?”

“I might be.” Her smile couldn’t get any brighter as she looks up at me.
