“I’d still like to know.”

“I’d rather not.”

“Why?”

“I won’t have it used as a weapon against me later,” I tell him.

“You think I’d do that? For what purpose, Luka? You’ve been a Bianchi for your entire life. I can’t change that for you,” he tells me.

“Which is why it doesn’t make sense to find out. I am who I am. We can’t change the past, and I already know my future.”

“Very well then. We won’t pursue the test, but I’d still like to offer my help with the matter of your father,” he says, swallowing hard.

“Plans are already in motion, but I could use extra protection for Delaney. I don’t trust my father won’t use her to get to me.”

“Done. I’ll get you as many soldiers as you need,” he says.

“Why?”

“I like you, Luka. Always have. I’ve never had many people in this world I trusted, but you are one of them.”

“I’m honored you would even say that to me.”

“It’s the truth.”

“Well, I appreciate that. And I’d appreciate this conversation staying between the three of us.”

“Not a problem. How are things otherwise? The marriage?” he asks, looking to Delaney for an answer. He knows how it all went down, so he knows firsthand she wasn’t very accepting at first.

“We’re good, Mr. Margetti,” she tells him.

“Vincent, please. Your father doesn’t like me much, but I assume there are other things at play for him as well?” he now turns his attention to me.

“Of course. I wouldn’t leave a single stone unturned.”

“Thorough. I like that about you, Luka. I must be going, but please don’t hesitate to call if you need anything,” he tells me. I nod and stand, shaking his hand before watching him walk out of the restaurant. Then I take my seat back next to Delaney.

“What do you have planned for my father? You told me you weren’t going to kill him.”

“I said I wouldn’t kill him, not that he wouldn’t wish he were dead, Delaney. There’s a difference,” I explain.

“What are you going to do?”

“That doesn’t concern you,” I tell her.

“It’s my father.”

“Your father traded you for a merger, Delaney. Do you honestly care what I do to him?” I ask her. She shifts in her seat, and I know the answer to that. She loves her father, but I’m right. He traded her to a man she didn’t want anything to do with. He traded her for something more, something better.

“You promised,” she whispers.

“And I keep my promises,Bellissima.”

“You aren’t going to kill him?” I shake my head and cup her cheek in my hand.

“No. I’m not.” She nods before leaning in and pressing her lips to mine. I savor every touch of her lips against mine.
