“How do you know that?”

“I can see how you look at my stomach. The adoration in your eyes. The way you treat me, how you love me.” Now my eyes move to meet hers.

“You think I love you?”

“Yes. I do. I can see it in your eyes. You care for me. You cherish me. You make me feel like I’m the only woman alive, and I love every second of it, Luka.”

“You can see all that?”

“Yes, I can. And I hope one day you can too. I know you can’t say it back to me because you don’t know what it is, but you feel it. I know you feel it.”

“You’re right. I can feel it in the pit of my stomach. I know there’s no one else out there for me. There’s no one I want more than you, Delaney.”

“What’s the plan for today?” she asks as we stare into each other’s eyes. I appreciate that she’s trying to help me from overthinking.

“We wait.”

“For what?”

“Your father to make a move.”

“I don’t know what to say.”

“Don’t say anything. I won’t let him near you,” I remind her.

“I know you won’t. I’m worried about you.”

“I’m fine. I wasn’t ready for them before. I am now,” I reassure Delaney. They may have snuck up on me at the casino, but that won’t happen again.

Just as we’re talking about it, my cell rings. I pull it from my pocket and answer, shocked at who’s on the other end.

“I want to meet.”

“Why?”

“To finish this nonsense. We’re fighting over nothing, Luka.”

“You had your men shoot at me.”

“It was a mistake. I know that now. I shouldn’t have done that. I want this to end. Your father is already dead, and there’s no need for a war. The only thing it will do is rip more families apart.”

“Where and when?”

“You agree with me?”

“I do agree. I have a child who needs me now. I don’t need to be in the middle of this war,” I tell him. We don’t need a war. That’s not a lie. Costa just doesn’t know it’s going to end for him today. Today will be his last day on this earth.

“Bring Delaney.”

“Not a chance in hell,” I tell him.

“No harm will come to her, Luka. This is a peaceful meeting, isn’t it?” I want to tell him, no, it’s anything but peaceful, but I can’t. I need him to show up. I need him to be there.

“It is, but she will not be attending it. This is between us,” I remind him.

“I just want to-” I cut him off there. There’s nothing he can say to make me change my mind.

“She will not be there.”
