“You have pain medicine in the IV. Let it run with the antibiotics for now,” he tells me.

“Where’s Delaney?”

“Outside the door.”

“Get her.” He nods and walks to the door, and as soon as he opens it, I see her rush past him and toward me. I smirk at her.

“Don’t you smile at me, Luka. You were shot!”

“I’m well aware,Bellissima.”

“Who did this?”

“Who do you think?” she shakes her head slowly as tears fill her eyes.

“You’re going after him, aren’t you?”

“I have no other choice now. I’m sorry,” I tell her. She wipes the tears from her cheek before she leans in and presses her lips to mine. Then she pulls up a chair and sits next to me, holding my good hand.

“You scared me. When Dave called, I was so scared, Luka.”

“I know you were, but I’m fine. I’m okay.”

“You’re hooked to an IV, Luka!”

“And I’m fine, Delaney. Stop the hysterics, please.” She nods, but I see the worry in her eyes. There’s nothing I can do to ease that worry, either.

Chapter 23

We’re back to being quiet again. Silence. I hate it. It has me on edge, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. I have my soldiers assembled and ready I’m just waiting on Margetti. He had a few things to tie up before this war commenced.

I’m ready for it. I’ve been ready for it. My shoulder has since healed, and Delaney’s stomach has grown bigger. It’s almost time for my baby to be here, and I want this shit over before then. I don’t want her worrying about our child on top of everything else she has going on. The poor woman is miserable.

“Come on,” I tell her, holding my hand to her. She looks up at me and rolls her eyes before sliding her hand into mine. I pull her up off the bed where she is lying and into a sitting position. Then I sit next to her and run my hands over her stomach.

“I can’t wait to meet this one,” I tell her.

“Me too. Do you think he’ll look like you?” she asks. He. We’re having a boy. My son. I can’t seem to wrap my head around that. I’m having a son.

“I’ll be thrilled if he looks like you,” I tell her before kissing her gently on the lips.

“Are you excited?”

“I am. I don’t think I’ve been ready for anything in a long time, but I’m ready for this,” I admit to her.

“Me too. I can’t wait to hold him in my arms.”

“You’re going to be a great mother, Delaney.”

“You’re going to make a great father, too,” she tells me. I don’t know about that. I didn’t have a great role model. I won’t say my father didn’t do the best he could because I think he did. He was just different than me.

I don’t want my son to grow up the way I did. I want him to feel loved and cared for. I don’t want him to think his life revolves around this world, being part of the mafia. Of course, he will always be just that, but I want more for him.

“What’s got you worried?”

“I don’t want to end up like my father,” I tell her honestly.

“You won’t. Your father didn’t love you, Luka. Not the way a father should. You’ll love this baby with all your heart. You already do.”
