“What do you mean? I’ve been good to her,” he growls.

“Yeah, but you’ve been different. We all see it. You’re markin’ her,” Drake tells me.

“And that’s a problem? Since when?” he asks, getting defensive. Drake smirks at him and shakes his head.

“It’s not a problem, brother. Just somethin’ new for you. I know you’re feelin’ some kind of way about Luke.”

“I don’t wanna talk about Luke.”

“Why not?”

“It’s over and done. It’s the past, and that’s where it needs to stay. If Raven has a problem with me markin’ her, that’s all she needs to say,” he growls again. I turn my head and look up at him, seeing the anger in his eyes.

“I don’t mind.”

“Then what’s the fuckin’ talk about?”

“How possessive you’ve been. I don’t want anyone else, Cross.” His eyes flash before he looks me in the eye.

“You know what this is? This is me tryin’ to keep the image of you and Luke outta my head. The idea of you fuckin’ him and bein’ with him makes me fuckin’ sick. Then after what he did to you? It’s not as easy as I thought it would be.” His admission makes my heart race. This is about Luke? About my time with him?

“I didn’t love him, Cross. If that’s what you think, you’re wrong.”

“You fuckin’ lived with him, Raven. How the hell didn’t I know this before?”

“Before what? Before we killed him? Before we slept together? What are you trying to say, Cross?” Now I’m on edge. I didn’t expect him to say that to me. I didn’t think it would matter that I was with Luke before. It’s over, and it’s been over for a long time.

“I don’t know what the fuck I’m tryin’ to say. I’m dealin’ with it, okay? Let me fuckin’ do it in my way,” he snaps.

“You need help, brother,” Drake chimes in. Cross shifts from foot to foot before looking over at him.

“Oh yeah? Why is that?”

“You’re lettin’ a dead man fuck with your head. Their past is just that, yeah? Let that shit go. He’s fuckin’ gone. He ain’t comin’ back, and every motherfucker in this clubhouse knows she’s yours. You wanna mark that girl? Go for it, but this isn’t about us. This is about you.”

“Fuck you. I don’t need your input.”

“You don’t need it, but you’re gettin’ it. Deal with your shit, Cross, before you scare the girl away.” With that, Drake shoves away from the bar and walks off toward the back of the room. Cross’s nostrils flare before he looks back down at me.

“That what you think too?”

“I don’t think anything. I just see how different you are with me.”

“And you don’t like it?”

“I didn’t say that. I just think something is bothering you that you aren’t telling me.” He sighs and runs his hand through his hair before stepping away from me. I reach for him, grabbing his wrist and pulling him back.

“I don’t know what to say. I want everyone to know that you’re mine and not his,” he finally says.

“They know, Cross. Listen, things weren’t good with Luke and me before all of this. We weren’t happy. We were just living. Sure we had some good times and were happy at one point, but that’s it. I didn’t love him. Maybe I thought I did once, but I didn’t. I can see that now,” I tell him.

“What do you mean you can see that now? How do you know now?”

“Because it didn’t feel like this,” I tell him, pointing between us. “I never felt the way I feel when I’m with you.” He looks confused for a second before it hits him.

“You love me?”

“I think I do. If that’s what this feels like, then yes,” I confess. I wouldn’t know what love felt like. I’ve never felt that for anyone.
