“You know he’s going to be fine,” Cheryl says as I watch the others hugging their men.

“I know.”

“Then go say ‘bye’ to your man.” She gives me a little shove to get me moving. I walk over to Cross as he finishes loading one of his guns and stuffs it into his jeans.

“You okay?” he asks as he looks me over.

“I wish you didn’t have to go.”

“Me too, but this shit is personal. They killed one of ours,” he tells me.

“I know. Doesn’t change anything.”

“I know, baby. But I’ll be back tomorrow.” With that, he leans down and presses his lips to mine. His kiss is hard and heavy, and I love every second of it. His tongue slides into my mouth, and I moan. When Cross pulls away from me, I hate it. I want him touching me, kissing me.

“Did you just whine?” he asks with a grin.

“Maybe.”

“You want me that bad?” he asks.

“You know I do. You can’t tease me with that kind of kiss and then just walk away,” I tell him.

“I wish I didn’t have to go either, but we need to handle this soon.”

“I know. Just be careful.”

“I will. And I’ll be back soon,” Cross promises before dropping another kiss on my lips. I watch him as he turns and walks toward the door with the other guys.

Evie and Cheryl come up on either side of me and wrap their arms around me.

“He’ll be fine,” Cheryl says.

“I’m sure he will.”

“Watching them leave is the hardest.” I nod my head as they all file out the door. We stand here, just like this, for what seems like forever before we break apart, and each of us sets out to do our own things.

It’s been about an hour since they left when the door opened. One of the prospects steps in front of whoever it is but quickly steps back. Then I see her. It’s Cross’s mom, and she’s holding a gun in her hand.

“What do you need?” I ask, taking over where Cross can’t.

“Where is he?”

“Cross isn’t here.”

“Yes, he is. Where the hell is he?” she screams. I watch the prospect pull his gun and aim it at her. This is going to end badly, and we all know it.

“He isn’t here. Why don’t you calm down and lower the gun.” She looks at me and narrows her eyes before aiming the gun at me. I swallow hard, knowing this could get bad fast.

“You tell me where he is,” she demands as I shake my head slowly.

“He isn’t here. I told you that.” Everything else seems to happen so quickly that I can barely register it. The shots being fired, the sting in my shoulder. The screams.

I fall to the floor and hit my head, lights flashing behind my eyes.

“Raven!” I hear Evie scream my name before someone has something pressing on my shoulder. I blink my eyes rapidly to try and get them to focus. That’s when I see Badger.

“You’re gonna be fine,” he tells me as I turn my head and look at my shoulder.
