Smart ass. I wasn’t even five years older than she was. “I’ve seen him. He wasn’t looking for me.”

“I assure you, he was.” Most of the time when Carly spoke, it was with confidence, and this didn’t seem like the kind of thing she would joke about.

I’d known Joystick was spending a lot of time with Diego and Raul in Italy. Supposedly he clicked with them immediately when he met them. After the time I’d spent with Joystick, it was easy to believe he made most of his friends by sheer force of will and existence.

Curiosity won out and I had to know, “why do you think he was looking for me?”

“Because of the way he talked about you while he was here. Nothing big. Nothing overt. Little questions here and there. Have you noticed he’s not exactly a subtle guy?”

“I have.”

“Except when it came to trying to find out about you,” Carly said.

Oh. But why me? “The whole thing with him is complicated.”

“Is it? Or do you just not want to explain?”

Given the way I was struggling to wrap my brain around the whole thing, I was pretty sure it was complicated. “Fine. you know how my brother is finally making his movie.”

“Not sure you mentioned that,” Carly teased.

Fair point. I was proud of what Andrew was doing, and I’d bragged a little. “So I’m dating the fixer he hired for his screenplay.”

“Since when?”

Was dating even the right word? After last night I was pretty sure. “Since… not long?”

“And Joystick found out and he’s insanely jealous.”

“Not quite.” I sucked my teeth. “The writer, Elijah—”

“Was Joystick’s co-star on Donovan. Fuck me.” Carly filled in several blanks for me.

I shrugged, though she couldn’t see me. How did she know that?

“Like I said, he talked a lot when he was here. Told a lot of stories,” Carly answered my unspoken question.

Right, then. “So you understand, Joystick came to the movie lot to find Eli, not me.”

Carly let out a long breath. “That does almost qualify as complicated. You win. But you’re banging them both.” She said it like a fact, not a question. “Same time or separately?”

“It’s not like that.”

“Do you want it to be?”

“Maybe.” Definitely. I couldn’t see them getting along well enough for that in the near future. Though that blowjob they shared…

I mentally cleared my throat.

“What’s stopping you? Go for it, woman,” Carly said.

“I don’t know.” But I did know, it just felt improper to admit it.

Carly was in love with two men, who very much loved each other. So were Daria and Brooke, who I hung out with on those rare occasions when our schedules lined up.

Why did I think being with two men wasn’t proper? “It’s complicated.”

“Uh-huh. Hang on.” There was muffled talking on Carly’s side for a minute. “Ellie wants me to read her the bedtime story she wrote. I’ll call you back. We’ll figure this out.”
