Damn it.

Unable to help myself, I reach for my phone before pulling my hand back. She has my number. If she wanted to talk to me, she would have messaged or called. She clearly isn’t interested in wasting her time on me, nor should she. After hurting her today, she probably needs space before she’ll even give me the time of day to apologize.

A yawn rips through me, and I try to settle my thoughts. I need to forget about her. I’m obviously not ready to enter the dating world. I should cut my losses before I completely embarrass myself.

My eyes grow heavy, and I find myself beginning to fall into unconsciousness when my eyes fly open, hearing the familiar cry coming through the baby monitor. “Daddy.”

Fuck.

I get up out of bed and head into Georgie’s room to find her little blue eyes filled with tears, and it kills me. Dropping to my knees beside her bed, I brush my fingers through her hair, trying to soothe her. “What’s wrong, baby? Did you have a bad dream?”

Her lower lip pouts out and she nods her little head.

With a sigh, I climb into her bed and start singing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star as I run my fingers through her hair. I guess tonight isn’t going to be as easy as I’d thought.

Chapter 10

GIGI

It’s a new day and a new me. Kind of. Okay, not really. Moral of the story, Sean no longer exists to me. From here on out, it’s just me and Mel, living our best lives. Well, I suppose Mel will be living her best life seeing as though she’s getting dicked down every night. Me on the other hand, I’ve recently invested in a new vibrator, but the jury is still out on that.

We drive down the highway early in the morning for our shift at the hospital. I’ve always been a morning person, but Mel, on the other hand, not so much. She needs a little kick up the ass each morning to get started, hence why the music is blasting and we each have an extra-large coffee in our hands—a coffee we had to stop to get, seeing as though our coffee machine is still being an asshole.

We sing along to the songs, shouting the lyrics at the top of our lungs as our raw throats beg us to stop. I zoom down the highway, completely lost in the song when red and blue lights start flashing in my rearview mirror. “Ahh, fuck,” I mutter as my gaze flashes down to my speedometer.

Yep, definitely speeding.

I study the police car behind me. Maybe he’s after someone else. I mean, there are a lot of cars on the road this morning. Maybe he’s about to change lanes and get the guy beside me.

“What’s going on?” Mel questions as I begin turning the music down and pulling off to the side.

“Cops,” I grunt.

“Were you speeding?” she questions.

I let out a heavy sigh. “Definitely.”

Sure enough, the cop veers off the side of the road and pulls up behind me. Just fucking great. That’s exactly what I need on a Monday morning.

The door opens and the policeman gets out of his car, and I watch through my side mirror as he makes his way toward me. Lowering my window, I begin searching for my license and registration, knowing he’s bound to ask.

I turn to face the man who hovers in my window and gasp as the recognition hits me. “Great,” I grumble under my breath as Sean’s douchebag best friend stares back at me, a twisted grin stretching across his stupid face.

“Well, if it isn’t Gigi,” he says, looking more than excited that he’s about to bust my ass.

I give him a fake smile, but there’s no hiding the disdain in my tone. “Tom.”

“Tom?” Mel questions from beside me and practically leans over into my lap so she can get a good look at the guy. “Tom? As in Sean’s best friend?”

“The one and only,” he says with a nod, his cocky attitude having me wonder just how much jail time I’d get for assaulting an officer on duty. I suppose it’s a good thing I now have the best criminal lawyer in the country owing me a favor after he tried to turn me into a skanky homewrecking side chick. Though considering he didn’t have the balls to even kiss me, it leaves me wondering what kind of balls he could possibly have in a courtroom.

Oh well, it’s old news now. It’s in the past. Besides, I don’t think I need to be involving myself with a man who was so ready to cheat on his wife in the presence of his baby. Like what the fuck was that about?

Despite my frustrations with the asshole cop, Mel can’t possibly skip the opportunity to feast her eyes upon the guy. There’s no doubt he’s hot. He’s exactly her type. Hot? Check. Uniform? Check. Manwhore? Double check. “Well, hello, Tom,” she purrs as she reaches over me to offer him her hand. “I’m Mel.”
