He crossed his arms aggressively over his chest. “Or what? You’ll go crying to DeAngelis about it?”

“If that’s what it takes. Maybe I will tell him that you owe me money and are refusing to pay me back.”

“Try it. I’ll put that video of you on the web so fast you won’t know what hit you. And then DeAngelis will know exactly what kind of whore you are.”

His words were a brutal slap. I wanted to scream that the video wasn’t real. That Marco would know it wasn’t. But it didn’t matter. Marco wouldn’t give a crap if it was real or not. He’d be furious I’d humiliated him if the world saw a video of his so-called fiancée enjoying a lurid gangbang.

“Maybe I’ll just tell him you forced me to tamper with his phone,” I said.

I was bluffing. I wanted to scare him.

To my surprise, it worked. Toby shifted uneasily on his feet beside the snooker table. “Relax. You’ll get the money. But you better keep your mouth shut. Any hint of what we’ve done, and DeAngelis will see us all dead or worse. And then you’ll see just how much of a fuck he doesn’t give about you.”

That terrified me. Not that Marco would hurt me, but that he’d know I had betrayed him.

Toby nodded in satisfaction. “He’s dangerous. You are playing with fire. And what were you thinking getting involved with him, especially after what he’s done? You little idiot.”

He really wanted me to believe that Marco had killed Dolly. But I had seen in Marco’s face that he was telling me the truth. He wanted to find out as badly as I did who had killed Dolly.

I gave a bitter laugh. “You would love me to think it was him, wouldn’t you?”

“You really have no idea about him,” Toby spat. “You’ve heard the rumours about what he did to the guy that killed his father, haven’t you?”

At my shocked expression, he looked pleased. He nodded. “Hunted him down like a dog, I heard. He’s vengeful. If he gets one sniff of what we’ve done, he will come for you too.”

His pale blue eyes glittered. He wanted me to hate Marco.

But had Marco really killed someone? Suddenly, I did not know what to think.

“He’s angry about what happened to Dolly,” I said. “I need to know if you had anything to do with it.”

“You have got to be kidding,” Toby said incredulously. “Haven’t you been listening to what I’ve been saying? Who else would have killed her but DeAngelis? Can you really be sure that he didn’t do it?”

“He can’t have.”

“Do you know that for certain?” he persisted.

I raised my chin angrily. “Somebody attacked me earlier today. They wanted to know what happened to Dolly. Something else is going on here.”

“Who?” he said, looking shocked.

“I don’t know. They had masks on.”

Toby shrugged. “DeAngelis is involved in all sorts of crap. Now that you’re with him, it’s made you a target. Get used to it. Or heck, maybe he set his own goons on you. Maybe he is suspicious of you.” Now he looked worried again.

“Marco would never do that,” I said hotly. “You still haven’t answered my question. Do you have anything to do with what happened to Dolly?”

Suddenly, he looked furious. “When will you get it through your thick head? If you want to know who killed Dolly, then you better ask Marco. I bet you don’t even know that he was one of Dolly’s regulars.”

I stared at him in shock. He was making it up.

He laughed at my expression. “You really didn’t know. I thought you just didn’t care. I’ve been trying to get in with DeAngelis for ages because of our plan. My friends have seen Dolly go up to his apartment all the time.”

I shook my head in disbelief. “That… That can’t be true. Or… Maybe she went up there with someone else. One of his business people, his cousins.”

Toby laughed. “She went up there all alone with him when no one else was around. What do you think they were up to, exactly?” His voice was sarcastic.

I shook my head. “It can’t be true. And you can’t possibly know that.”
