“You were my girl. Did you really think I wouldn’t keep a lookout for you? I had my friends keeping their eyes open in that place.”

Dolly and Marco? I couldn’t help but feel crushed.

Toby saw it on my face.

“My God, you really have gotten it bad for him,” he said in disgust. Again that suspicious glance at my midriff. “Just remember that no matter what happens, if he gets suspicious and starts questioning you about stuff, you play innocent and keep your mouth shut. Stick to the story that you don’t know anything. Or maybe what happened to Dolly will happen to you.”

On that horrible note, he stalked out, slamming the door behind him.

Chapter 20

BETH

I went to the window booth of the smoking room and sank down shakily. My head was spinning. Had Marco and Dolly been seeing each other?

Just the idea of it hurt. Felt like a betrayal somehow, even though it was not my business.

After all, Dolly had been full of secrets, and made it clear that she loved me, but she wasn’t going to tell me everything about herself.

And I had not even told her I had a crush on Marco, so it wasn’t like she had reasons to stay away from him.

And if they’d been lovers, it suddenly became more possible that Marco might really have killed her.

Why had he not told me that he knew her?

My fingernails sank into the dense, waxed leather of the window seat like it was a stress ball. I punched it, but the tight knot of feelings inside my stomach did not ease.

The door opened, its creak disturbing the thick quiet in here. I looked up, expecting to see Toby. To my surprise, it was Jonathan who came in.

“I saw him leave you in here, and wanted to check if you were okay?” he said.

There was a strange watchfulness in his eyes and a tension in his body that instantly put me on edge.

“I’m fine,” I said. “I just needed some time alone to think.”

“About Dolly?” he asked, his voice quiet but clearly audible from across the room.

I nodded, expecting him to leave when he turned. Instead, he locked the door.

“What are you doing?” I said, my voice going a little sharp.

“I wanted to talk to you about Dolly too,” he said, coming slowly towards me around the snooker table. “About what she said to you.”

“What do you mean? What did she say to me?”

“You tell me.” There was a hardness in his tone that was alarmingly now.

I rose to my feet, but he had already come around the snooker table that dominated the centre of the room and was blocking my way. There was nowhere for me to go.

I suddenly remembered Dolly telling me not to take the job with him. Several times. As if she had disliked him.

“Did you and Dolly know each other?” I asked sharply.

“She was a whore,” he said. “And it may surprise you to know this, but I knew her well. But not as well as your father did.”

I sucked in a sharp breath. “What the hell does that mean?”

He stood in front of me, clenching and unclenching his fists, his eyes never leaving me.
