“I don’t know him well, but I hear he only does situationships.”

She looked up at him. “What’s that?”

“You know, you’re not dating, but you hook up whenever you’re in the same town. Jaime likes women who don’t live in Calamity. You might live across the country, but you’re staying on his ranch. That probably wouldn’t work for him.”

Then, he needs to keep the hell away from me. “Yeah, that’s not my thing. Let’s just dance.” She started to back away, to get into the rhythm of the song, but a grin teased his lips, as he swung her away from Jaime.

He pulled her up close and wrapped his arms around her as if they were doing a slow dance at the prom. His hands inched down her back.

“Lou.” She tried to wriggle out of his hold, but he held her firmly. “What are you doing?”

He chuckled. “Trust me.”

ChapterEleven

Jaime fucked up.

Badly.

He wanted to charge onto the dance floor, elbowing everyone out of the way, toss Gracie over his shoulder, and take her home.

But he couldn’t.

Because he’d done this. He’d stood there like an asshole when Lou had asked her out. He could’ve claimed her. Could’ve said,She’s mine.

Or, maybe less caveman, he could’ve said something as simple asGrace and I are dating.

Instead, he’d disrespected her.

He’d made Grace feel like she didn’t matter. Like she was just someone to fuck in the middle of the night.

Opening up to her, confessing his feelings about how happy she made him, meant nothing when his actions told a whole other story.

Shame burned through him. It was bad enough he’d hurt her, but now, he had to endure the punishment of watching her with another man.

Well, fuck that. Fuck this shame, this guilt, this constant fear he lived with that something terrible was about to happen.

Fuck it all. He’d gotten lucky beyond measure when this beautiful, happy, passionate woman had crashed into him, and he wasn’t going to mess it up.

“What’re you looking at?” At nearly six feet in those heels, Maxine was eye level.

Unfortunately, she was blocking his view. Over the loud music, roar of conversation, he could only hear one thing: his blood pounding in his ears.

Because Lou was holding Grace like a boyfriend. Not like a couple on their first date.

This is torture.

“No way,” Maxine said. “No fuckin’ way.”

“No way what?” He was distracted. Gracie didn’t seem all that comfortable, but she wasn’t pushing him away. That should be me. I should be slow dancing with her, taking her on hikes, making her dinner.

She cooks all day, works in her truck…and smashes a burrito on the way home.

Why am I not cooking for her?

Because I don’t want her around Kinny?

What thehellis wrong with you?Kinny would be lucky to know a woman like Gracie.Even if it’s only for a few weeks, it will be the best thing that’s ever happened to my daughter.
