“I never thought I’d see the day.”

Now, he was just irritated. “Get to the point.” He probably shouldn’t talk that way to the woman who was responsible for seventy percent of his sales, but he’d known her a long time. She and her dad were the ones who’d given him guidance when renting the cabins hadn’t gone the way he’d hoped. They’d helped launch his business. He owed her everything.

“Who is she?” Maxine asked.

“She’s my heart.”

He could feel Maxine watching him, but he couldn’t take his eyes off Gracie.

“But she’s taken?”

Determination kicked him into action. “She sure as fuck is.” He launched off the bar and arrowed through the crowd.

He’d hurt his heart. The only woman he’d ever wanted.

Back home, she didn’t sing. She didn’t make her special pastries. Her family didn’t see her.

But I do. I see her, and I want all of her.

Clamping a hand on Lou’s shoulder, he pried him away.

His friend grinned. “Oh, hey.”

He gave the guy a menacing look—don’t fucking play with me—before turning to Gracie. “Can I talk to you?”

She arched a brow. But he saw the slight quiver in her lips, and it just about broke him.

“Please?” He grated out the word he only ever wanted to hear come out of her mouth when he was close to giving her an orgasm.

“Will it be worth my while?” she asked. “Or are you going to waste more of my time?”

“Gracie.” The two syllables came out a jagged-edged growl.

She blew out a breath and rolled her eyes. “Fine.”

Reaching between them, he closed his hand around her wrist and pulled her out of Lou’s arms.

The idiot threw his head back and laughed. “The guys are going to love this.”

But Jaime didn’t give a shit what he said. He cupped Gracie’s elbow and fast-walked her to the long hallway that held bathrooms, a utility room, and an office. He crowded her against the wall. “I’m sorry.”

“You hurt me.”

“I know. Dammit.” He smacked the wall with the palm of his hand. “I wasn’t thinking when I asked you not to tell anyone about us.”

She shook her head. “That’s the point, isn’t it? You have these knee-jerk reactions, and I’m telling you right now, I’m not here for the drama. You either get your shit together, or we’re going to be people who wave as our cars pass each other in the driveway.”

“No.” His firm tone was louder than he’d intended, and she flinched. “That’ll never be enough. Gracie, I think about you all the time. I can’t sleep at night for wanting you.” He had to dig deeper though, find the truth, and pull it out by the roots. “Last night was better than anything…it was…” Frustrated, he exhaled roughly. “I’m so fucking crazy about you. But right after I said I wanted to be with you this summer, I got…”

“You got what? Say it. Talk to me.”

“I got scared. I have so much good in my life, it feels…dangerous to add more.”Yes, that’s it. That’s what it feels like.“But you’re the most amazing person I know, and I disrespected you by trying to hide us. I’m sorry. I still want to be careful with Kinny—”

“Of course.”

“But you’re no one’s secret. You’re mine, Gracie. And I’m going to make you feel special every minute of every day. You’ve got a smile that brings me to my knees, andIwant to put it on your face.”

“You’ve got a shitty way of going about it.”
