“Because Rhys plays dirty,” he said through gritted teeth.

Undeterred, Rhys ignored Cole and waded across the pool, stopping at the end of my float. “It’s like regular Truth or Dare but in the water.”

He gripped the float and pulled me toward him, which started a tug-of-war with Cole. As Cole tightened his grip on the cord, Rhys claimed his dominance over me. They went back and forth, shaking me until I nearly fell into the water.

“Hey, would you two stop fighting over me? I’m not a toy.”

Rhys let go of the float, and before I rolled into the water, he lifted me into his arms. “I got you now, princess.” He hooked my legs around his back and carried me into the deeper end.

“Put her down!” Cole flopped off the float and swam to us in seconds. His fingers dug into Rhys’s thick bicep. “I’m not fucking around anymore. If you don’t stop it, I’m sending your ass back to California.”

Rhys curled his arms around me. “Try it. Your dad won’t let you.”

I expected them to act like friends since they had gone to school together and were Knights. Instead, I got constant bickering about me that was getting old fast.

“Cole, it’s okay,” I assured him. “Rhys isn’t hurting me.”

“Not now,” he hissed, his angry blue eyes aimed at Rhys. “But he will if given a chance. You’re not the type of girl he dates.”

His harsh words stung as if he’d stabbed me in the chest.

“Thanks a lot, Cole.”

“C’mon, Grace,” he groaned. “That’s not how I meant it. Rhys dates easy girls. Not sweet girls like you. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. I’m only trying to protect you from men like him.”

“Maybe I’m notthatsweet. And maybe I don’t need your protection twenty-four-seven. I’ve never been free a day in my life. So stop yelling at Rhys and play the game with us. All of this fighting is getting on my nerves.”

“Mine too,” Rhys commented. “Get another drink, Marshall, and relax already. You’re killing our vibe.”

Cole’s nostrils flared.

I couldn’t see Rhys’s expression, but judging by the look on Cole’s face, it was another victorious smirk. Seconds later, Cole stormed out of the pool, splashing water in his wake. Then, he headed toward the house, flinging a beach towel over his shoulder.

“You’re all mine,” Rhys said with a villainous look in his pretty green eyes. “Still wanna play the game with me?”

My stomach twisted into knots now that I was alone with Rhys without Cole to intervene. I hadn’t expected him to get that mad over nothing.

“Promise to go easy on me?”

A sinister grin pulled at his lips. “I play games to win. So I’m not making any promises.”

ChapterTwelve

GRACE

After Cole stormed into the house, Rhys stalked toward me. I inched backward, hoping to create some space. But I had nowhere to run.

“Where are you going, princess?” One of his sexy smirks lit up his handsome face. “You said you wanted to play the game.”

I swallowed hard, clearing the lump in my throat. We were alone, and I was barely dressed, with the eyes of a hunter gazing at my breasts.

“Sure, I’ll play,” I bit out. “But I’ll probably suck at it.”

“I’m sure you’re good at sucking,” he said, and it sounded way too sexual. “How about I start?”

Rhys took up the space on my right, his elbow propped up on the ledge. I couldn’t make eye contact when I knew I would find his bright green eyes on my body.

He leaned in, his lips dangerously close to mine. “Truth or dare, princess?”
