“That’s a generous salary,” I commented.

Olivia graduated from Kingston University over in Beacon Bay. It was one of the most prestigious colleges on the East Coast and came with a hefty price tag. One year of work in exchange for no student loan debt made Olivia the highest-paid assistant in history.

Drake held up his hands and shrugged. “It’s Liv. I can’t say no to her. She can be very persuasive.”

Tate Maxwell was an associate of The Devil’s Knights but didn’t come from money like us. He was Drake’s head of security and his best friend.

Tate and Olivia left a lousy situation at their foster home when Drake found them wandering the streets. At first, Tate was a dick to him. But Drake was persistent and put them up in one of his apartment buildings. He fed them and made sure they got an education.

My cousin had a good heart. The Maxwells were like family to Drake. He was an only child and even lonelier after his father’s death.

I sat in the leather chair across from him, resting my shiny dress shoe on my knee. “Does Tate know you’re trying to fuck his sister again?”

“We haven’t fucked. And we never will.” He scrubbed a hand across his jaw. “She likes to torture me. And when she wears those goddamn dresses, I can’t even concentrate.” Drake groaned. “I think she likes giving me blue balls.”

“I remember when she had braces and glasses and wore her hair in those stupid-looking clips. She’s a knockout now.”

He bobbed his head. “When she came home from college, I nearly had a fucking heart attack. Tate noticed my reaction to her and reminded me to keep my hands off his sister.”

I laughed. “Looks like you’ve been doing a shit job keeping your promise.”

He rolled his shoulders against the leather chair. “We were flirting.”

“Uh-huh. Do you talk to all of your secretaries like that? Bend them over your desk, too?”

He snorted.

No.

My cousin was careful. He didn’t fuck around or shit where he ate. Men like us had too much attention on us.

I surveyed the room, taking in the wall of glass windows that looked like mirrors.

Maybe they were mirrors.

It was hard to tell.

This level wasn’t on any of the floor plans. Adding windows would have only made it more noticeable from the outside. So maybe the glass was to give the appearance of having a view.

He didn’t have a receptionist or other support staff on this floor. Only his office and the lab where he kept his artificial intelligence software.

The Lucaya Group had been trying to steal it from him. So had other criminal organizations, corrupt governments, and even crime families. The threats against Drake had gotten so bad he took the AI offline and moved it to a secure room.

Drake shot up from the chair and cleared his throat. “Come with me. We need to do the retinal and hand scan. Just in case something happens to me.”

“This place is better guarded than Fort Knox.” I followed him out of the office and down the hall. “No one is getting into your building.”

He turned left at the corner, his pace unwavering. “Someone made it into my office on the fiftieth floor last week. The guards subdued him before he could take anything.” Drake bit his lip. “They’re getting close, Cole. It’s only a matter of time. The passcodes change every ten minutes. I’m doing everything I can to keep us on lockdown.”

“How did he get into the building without security noticing?”

“Stole a badge from a guard.”

Drake stopped at the door on our right and pressed his hand to the panel on the wall. “Good morning, boss,” Lovelace said, and the door clicked open. “Have you remembered to take your vitamins today?”

“Not yet,” he sighed.

“Would you like me to schedule a reminder?” Lovelace asked.
