“Because it keeps you from sitting at home bored on a Friday night while your girl is out with her friends.”

This is the first time in forever I’ve managed to drag Devon away from Kyra. She takes up almost all of his time, which wouldn’t be an issue if she didn’t treat him like something she stepped in. Even tonight, I know we are hanging out on borrowed time. Soon enough, she will call him, and he will go running off into the night.

He lines up his shot but misses everything on the table.

“Glad we aren’t playing for money,” he says with a heavy sigh.

Joking, I reply, “Wouldn’t want to put my own brother in the poor house.”

He laughs. “I appreciate that. Speaking of brothers, where’s our oldest one at tonight?”

He sips his beer while I line up my shot. “He said he and Avery were having a date night.”

Duke is the oldest of the Samson boys. He’s a good fifteen years older than me, and he was in the Navy for half of his own life. We have just recently started getting closer. The military fucked up his head pretty good, but Avery, his girl, has slowly helped heal all of his invisible wounds.

Devon says, “I’m so glad that grumpy son of a bitch found someone who makes him smile.”

“Yeah,” I agree. “Avery is pretty great. We should all be so lucky to find someone like her.”

He gives me a half snort. “Bro, in all those women you’ve been with, you can’t find a decent one?”

“You make me sound like a man-whore.”

“If the shoe fits.”

I give him a hard punch to the shoulder. It’s true that I’ve been with my fair share of women, but it’s probably not as many as my brother thinks.

He pulls me out of my thoughts. “What about that one girl that you were dating? Amy?”

“Amber,” I correct.

“Whatever.”

“We wanted different things.”

“Oh?”

I nod. “Yeah, I wanted to get serious. She wanted to date her academic advisor.”

“Shit, man, that sucks.”

“Yep. But you know what the worst part is? I wasn’t even that upset about it.”

“Guess that goes to show you that she wasn’t the one,” he says.

“I’m just tired of dating twenty-somethings.”

His eyes narrow in on me. “You know thatyou’rea twenty-something, right?”

“I’m aware. I’m just ready to find someone who cares about something more than what’s on the outside. A woman who has some substance to her.”

“You’ll find her,” he says, trying to be reassuring.

“I guess. It makes it hard with my schedule. For most women, every other weekend isn’t near enough. They’re either worried that I’m cheating, or they do it while I’m gone.”

“You ever stepped out on a girl while you were on the road?” He asks.

“Nah, man. I’m a lot of things, but a cheater isn’t one of them.”
