“Knock yourself out… On second thought, watch your step, and stay upright.” He jokes, planting a kiss on the crown of my head.

I turn on the water to warm the tiles and find extra towels rolled into fluffy tubes on a shelf. It’s nice they aren’t hidden in a cabinet. I don’t want to be accused of snooping, but then I worry about why the towels are readily available.

“Not helpful, Paisley,” I mutter, taking off my rumpled dress. “Jake doesn’t care who you’ve been with. And you need to trust his word. Don’t make a big deal out of a decorating idea you saw dog-eared in a hospital waiting room magazine.”

Yet the ground is always shifting with Jake and I don’t trust it won’t come up and swallow me whole. That’s why I argue. That’s why I stand up for myself and show him I deserve his respect.

I stand under the spray, letting it loosen my sore muscles.

The door opens. Jake walks in. Lost in my thoughts, I yelp.

Steam coats the glass shower door, but I cover the front of me. He’s a blurry mass on the opposite side of the bathroom, sifting through a drawer between the double sinks.

“What are you doing?” I face the tile.

He chuckles at my modesty. “Hiding doesn’t change the fact that I’ve seen it all, corazón.”

Notmyall.

I peer over my shoulder. “Are you done yet?”

His mass shifts, leaning against the sink with his arms crossed. “The real question is, are you? How long do women shower alone? The only time my bathroom has seen this much heat is when I’ve used the double heads for their intended purpose.”

“Thanks for the visual, but that’s not exactly sexy.” Why is Jake planting other women in my mind? Did I miss the memo? Am I not over the towel thingy? Did we not spend the night messing around like two virginal teenagers?

“How do you know it’s not sexy? Have you thought about everything we could do together with that shower head? I have. I am right now.” He saunters across the room with his lazy signature swagger.

My belly tightens and the small space—perfectly comfortable before—becomes over-warm.

“If you let me come in there we could experiment.” Jake reaches for the door handle.

“No!”

“Okay. Your loss. So that you are aware, there’s a massage setting.”

“Why are you still here?” I ask when Jake doesn’t go back to his bedroom.

He’s standing with the opaque barrier separating us by less than an inch. I can feel his cocky smile as if the steamy fog is non-existent.

“Did you hear me say there was a massage head?”

“I’m not deaf.”

“Neither am I. That’s why I’m waiting for you to flip that lever and use it.”

“While you’re in the room?” I laugh sardonically. As if I’d ever do that in front of… Anyone. Warmth spreads into my lower belly. My bare thighs rub together. Oh, God, would I?

“Exactly.”

“Wh-why?” I cannot believe he’s serious about staying!

“Because you’re my guest and I want you to enjoy the shower head. And because after listening to all the sounds you make in the dark when I stuck my tongue between your legs, now I want to hear to you pleasure yourself.”

“But you can’t see anything.”

“Pais,” Jake’s outline closes in on the door. “I’m not leaving until you do, which means at some point the water will run cold, and I’ll be watching you. Not. Just. Listening.”
