She gave him a blank stare. “Of what?”

He let out an exasperated sigh. “Our first kiss.”

“Oh. You mean our first and last kiss.”

He shook his head. “It’s only the last because it was the most recent, but I can assure you it won’t be the final kiss. A kiss that sets off explosions inside me deserves an encore.”

She waved him off. “I only kissed you so she couldn’t.”

“I know. But you could have left it at a kiss, but you added to it.”

“I did not. It was a simple kiss. Nothing more.”

“You cupped my face and leaned in. I thought you were going to climb into my lap.” He shook his head. “You can lie to yourself, but I know what that kiss was.”

“It was work.” She frowned. “We call that improvisation. I had to put distance between you and the predator.”

“How many kisses have you improvised in your line of work? I’m guessing mine was the first.”

“I told you it was work.”

“So, you get paid for kisses? And you said I was a ho,” he chuckled.

Maisey showed up with her arms lined with plates. It looked like she was serving an entire family their meal, but all the plates were for them. “Who’s a ho?”

“Excuse me?” Red asked.

“Who’s callin’ who a ho? This is a family establishment.”

She placed the plates on the table with the lion’s share in front of Viv.

“No one. We were talking about how—” he started.

“A simple kiss could be made into something it’s not,” Viv finished.

Maisey smiled. “Kisses never lie. They’re either dynamite or duds. There’s nothing in between. It’s how I knew my Ben was the one.” She pivoted and walked away.

“See. Kisses don’t lie, and you shouldn’t either.”

“Fine, it was a good kiss, but I’m sure you could do better.”

“Is that a challenge?”

She forked a bit of pancake and put it in her mouth. “So good.”

He spent the next forty-five minutes watching her eat every single bit, just like she promised. She leaned back and patted her full tummy.

“Are you ready to go? We’ve got a lot of things to do today.” She pulled out her phone. “First stop is the home electronics superstore in Copper Creek. We need more cameras and a new alarm pad with dynamic codes that you can change before someone else shows up at your door. Then we need to go to a hardware store to get a deadbolt.”

“Do we need to get someone to install it?”

“I can do it.”

“You’re amazing.”

She tossed out a couple of twenties and rose from the table.

“And apparently a professional kisser. Let’s go.”
