I recoil slightly, taking a step back away from him. My heart thumps in my chest at his revelation.

I have Dax, and Rori, and you.

You.

My eyes water as I think of mine and King’s rocky relationship since we were teens. He doesn’t have me at all.

“You’re wrong, King,” I whisper. A tear drops onto my cheek and King’s eyes follow it immediately. “You don’t have me. You lost that right when you left me nine years ago.”

I don’t wait around and I know he’s lost his fight. Just as I make it to the door, his voice stops me.

“Nine years ago? You’re holding what happened between us as kids against me?” His voice is quiet and he sounds genuinely confused.

“I was. And I can see nothing’s changed. You just use people for your own gain and then dispose of them. Lucky for me, it’s happened twice.” I scoff and leave the room.

KING

It’s beentwo months since me and Theo snuck out to the waterfall. It’s not often that we’re able to sneak out, but when we do, it’s like everything in my life doesn’t matter.

Instead of growing up, going to school, and having a bunch of friends to get up to no good with and talk to girls, I had a completely different upbringing. Sure, I was Carlo Rhivers son and the heir to the First District. And I had my cousin Dax, who was also my best friend, and Puck, the maid’s son. But that was it.

Meeting Theo was like a breath of fresh air and it felt good to feel something for someone.

I’m sitting in the games room with Puck, playing a game of pool and thinking about where we could go tonight. I’m seeing her and can’t wait to kiss her again.

My phone vibrates with a new message, Theo’s reply to my last one.

Haha, you wish King ;) but maybe later? I can’t wait to see you! x

I laugh at her teasing and go to type back a message when I hear a throat clear.

“You gonna play or shall I take your shot?” Puck asks, amused.

I roll my eyes and put my phone in my pocket.

“You make me sick.” Puck laughs, pointing at my pocket.

“Oh yeah, Pucker, like you’re any better with Bonnie?” I laugh, calling him out on his shit.

Puck and Bonnie have been together for nearly two years. At first, I was very protective of Bonnie. It’s bad enough that she’s been hidden from the whole world and completely secluded. I didn’t need Puck coming in and making matters worse. Especially because he was sixteen and Bonnie only fourteen when they got together. At first, it was just innocent crushes, but now, even still so young at eighteen, you can tell Puck loves her.

I love my sister and will do anything I can to protect her. Aside from living in seclusion, growing up without a mother had a huge impact on her and I noticed Bonnie struggle more and more each day. Puck came at the right time for her.

Thinking about my mother still hurts. She died of an overdose, leaving me and Bonnie in the care of father dearest. It hurts that she left us, that she didn’t try harder. And I don’t even know what was so hard for her that she couldn’t live this life anymore.

After scrambling my thoughts and playing another round, the door to the room is slammed open and almost knocked off its hinges. My father storms in and grabs Puck by the collar, spitting and shouting in his face. I’m hauled back by a guard who followed Carlo in.

“What the fuck, Dad?” I shout, trying to make sense of the situation.

“This will be the last time I ever fucking see your face again. Stay away from my child,” Carlo shouts, punching Puck square in the jaw. Two more men come in and haul Puck’s writhing body out of the room as he fights for freedom.

At first, I thought Carlo was talking about me. Stay away from my child. But he must mean Bonnie. He doesn’t have it in him to say daughter.

My father has never come to terms with the fact my mother had Bonnie. A beautiful little girl. No, he wanted sons for heirs. A daughter was just unacceptable to him. Hence why he kept her hidden away. The shame, apparently, was too much to cope with.

“King, KING!” Puck shouts as he tries to reach out for me. I push against the guard holding me, trying to get to him, but it’s no use.
