He growled low in his throat. “I don’t care about that part. Why did you leave me?”

“I thought it was the only way to protect Kylie. Morex called me and told me he’d take her if I didn’t get on a plane without you. I knew you would never let me go even if it meant risking her life.”

Nate blinked. “You mean it had nothing to do with our fight?”

“No.”

He let out a breath. “I thought when you said you needed space…”

I shook my head. “You idiot. I didn’t need the kind of space that required getting on an airplane.” I took a deep breath and then broached the other subject we needed to talk about. “I’m pregnant.”

“I know.” His gaze drifted down to my stomach. “It’s probably wrong on so many levels, but knowing you’re carrying my baby makes you even sexier than you were before.”

I grinned. “Can you see the baby?”

“No. I can sense the angelic power.” His fingers brushed over the skin of my stomach so softly it felt like being touched by a feather. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you,” he said with steely determination. “Either of you.”

I sighed. “I don’t want you to get yourself killed for me. Please don’t go jumping in front of any bullets.”

Nate chuckled. “You know a bullet wouldn’t actually kill me. It’d be annoying, but that’s a pretty small price to pay to keep you alive.”

I rolled my eyes. “You know what I mean. Just tweak the analogy to comply with all your angel mojo.”

He grinned at me. “Angel mojo? God, you’re cute.” Slowly he leaned forward and placed a kiss on the tip of my nose. “And beautiful.” He kissed my cheek. “And strong.” He kissed the other cheek. “And I love you. Please don’t ever leave me again.”

“I won’t. I told you, I wouldn’t have gone if I’d known about the bond tying your life to mine.”

He pulled back to look into my eyes intently. “Even if the bond is broken. Promise me, Sierra.”

I nodded. If there was going to be more danger in our future, we would face it together, side by side. “I promise. But you have to promise me you’ll never lock me in a house in the mountains or anywhere else.”

His laugh was breathy and held a touch of relief. “I promise I will do anything to keep you by my side. I won’t try to hide you away, and I won’t leave you no matter what I’m ordered to do.”

My heart swelled at his words even though I knew they were dangerous. I leaned forward until our foreheads were touching. “I love you.”

I was fairly sure we’d never get our chance to be a regular happy family no matter what Nate did, but for now I wanted to believe in that dream. A few hours ago, I was sure we were both going to die today. We deserved a minute of pretending we were safe.

While we waited for Samuel to come back, Nate used one of his knives to cut through the bonds on my wrists, and then we sat on the floor, holding each other for what felt like years and only seconds at the same time.

Eventually the door opened, but the angel who stood there wasn’t Samuel. He was no less gorgeous—because all angels were clearly model beautiful—with blue-black hair and startling indigo eyes. He looked a few years older than Nate, but I guessed he could have been any age really. There was a book bag slung over one of his bare shoulders. Of course he was shirtless, because that was apparently the normal dress code for angels today. But as stunning as he was, what really caught my eye was his wings. They were the same blue-black as his hair, so dark they seemed to absorb all the light around them. And they werehuge. They must have spanned at least nine feet. Looking at him, I couldn’t help the shiver that ran down my spine.

“Micah,” Nate said, sounding wary and resigned at the same time.

“Nathaniel.” The angel sighed. “This is your definition of not getting yourself killed?”

“I’m still breathing, aren’t I?”

“For now.”

“You’re always such a ray of sunshine,” Nate muttered. “Sierra, this is Micah. Archangel and leader of the secret order.”

I was hit with the sudden desire to shield Nate from Micah’s view. I didn’t know what he was doing here, but I doubted it was to bring us good news.

Micah nodded to me. “Pleasure to meet you. Now we have to go.”

“Go where?” Nate asked, his body tensing.

“I’m sorry.” Micah sounded genuine, and his eyes were sad. “I tried, Nathaniel. But I can’t ignore orders. This isn’t as simple as turning a blind eye.” His gaze landed on me, and his brow furrowed as he studied me.
