“And what consequence is it that you expect?”

I stiffened, my heart pounding and my hands trembling slightly. “I don’t know.”

“But you believe that you have sinned against me.” It didn’t sound like a question, but I felt the need to answer anyway.

“I’ve fathered a child with a human—a Nephilim. It’s against the law.”

“It is.”

My heart sank.

“In most cases,” He added.

I looked up, immediately feeling a stab of pain at the blinding brightness. “Sir?”

“You never tried to hurt her, did you?”

I blanched. “Of course not.”

“Try.”

“I’m sorry, Father, but I can’t do that.”

“Of course you can’t. Even if you try, your blades will be harmless to her. She is your mate.”

I sucked in a breath. Mate. They were a legend among the angels. It was rare to find your mate, and if you did, you were considered lucky. The bond was sacred, it was impossible for an angel to harm their mate, and nothing but a direct order from God himself could ever come before what they needed.

I looked back at Sierra. Was she really my mate? I loved her more than my life. But she was a human. I didn’t think angels could be mated to humans.

“What does that mean for us?” I held my breath while I waited for His answer.

“It means you are exempt from the Nephilim law.”

I took a breath and asked for the one thing I’d never believed I would ever get. “Father, please allow me to stay with her. I’ll give up my heavenly fire. You can banish me to Earth. Just let me stay in her life. Please.”

“Nate, no.” Sierra’s voice sounded shaky, like she was about to start crying. Dammit. I didn’t want her to be upset about this. I’d promised her I’d do anything to stay by her side. It’s what we’d agreed on.

I didn’t look away from God’s glory. I would not take the words back. Sierra meant more than being in Heaven.

“I cannot accept that,” He said.

My heart dropped, and a suffocating pressure pressed down on me. It felt like chains were wrapping around my neck, cutting off my air.

“The secret order needs you… with your heavenly fire intact. That being said, the secret order is a job. You do not need to live in Heaven to work with them. You may stay on Earth with your mate and your daughter, but when Micah has a job for you, you will have to do it.”

I blinked, struggling to digest what He was saying. I could go back to Earth with Sierra. We were going to be able to keep our… daughter.

We were having a girl. Holy shit. This was really happening. I was going to be a father. I was going to stay with Sierra. We were getting our happily-ever-after. And the only price I had to pay was continuing to work for and take orders from Micah.

“Thank you.” My voice sounded rough with the emotion I was trying to hold back. I bowed my head again before standing and moving back to Sierra. I wrapped my arms around her, needing to touch her, to prove to myself that this was real.

I pressed a kiss to her forehead, letting my lips linger there. For the first time in ten years, I was genuinely looking forward to my future, to the rest of my life.

Sierra’s palms landed on my chest, right over the bandages wrapped around my torso.

Okay, I’ll admit my wings slowly growing back was one part of my future I was not looking forward to going through. But I’d survive.

And I’d go through it all over again if I had to. Having my wings cut off was a small price to pay for what I’d been given.
