“I’m proud of you.” I reached over and squeezed her hand.

“Don’t be too proud. That something missing is probably an affiliation with the mafia.”

“Please don’t say that. I worry about you enough.”

Kylie pulled into her parking spot and killed the engine. “You better get in there.”

“Why?” I asked slowly.

“Because as much as I love spending time with you, I’ve been distracting you all afternoon.”

I was out of the car and throwing open the back door to my apartment before I had time to think about it.

The living room looked exactly as it usually did. I could see Nate through the window in the kitchen wall. Nothing seemed amiss at all.

I frowned. What was Kylie talking about?

Nate left the kitchen, walking toward me. He was wearing black jeans and my favorite maroon shirt. “Did you have a good afternoon?”

“Yeah, it was nice. What’s going on?”

He bent down to press a quick kiss to my lips. “I’m making dinner. Do you want anything to drink?”

“Sure?”

He smirked at me. “Oh, and I had a question for you.”

“Okay…”

The smirk disappeared, replaced by an expression that seemed almost nervous. My heart jumped in my chest. Nerves were contagious.

Nate dropped to his knees in front of me. “When I was given the assignment to be your guardian, I didn’t want to come. I’d never been a big fan of Earth or humans. I had no idea in that moment how you were going to change my life. You gave me something to live for beyond fighting and killing demons. I don’t know what I would have done without you, baby girl.” He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. “You are my everything, and I love you so much. Will you marry me?”

I stared from the ring in his hand to his face. So this was what he was doing while Kylie distracted me—buying a ring. I’d never cared about diamonds. I just wanted Nate by my side forever.

“If you don’t like the ring, we can get something different. I just felt like an ass proposing without one.”

As if that’s what was important to me. I’d marry him if he’d proposed with a plastic ring from the dollar store.

I bit my lip, trying to rein in my grin.

He groaned, closing his eyes as if in pain. “What do you want from me? I’ll do whatever it is, just please, baby girl, answer the damn question.”

“Yes.” I took his face in my hands and kissed him. It took him about half a second to take control, deepening the kiss and devouring my mouth like his life depended on it.

“What am I doing with the ring, baby girl?” he asked when we came up for air.

I pulled my left hand back from his face and held it out to him. He brought it up to his lips, kissing the backs of my fingers before sliding the diamond onto my finger.

“Damn. And I didn’t think you could get any sexier.”

I rolled my eyes, but the cheek-splitting smile on my face probably ruined the effect. For the first time since everything that went down in Georgia, I didn’t feel even a hint of sadness. I was too blessed to feel anything but joy.
