She chewed on her plump lower lip. “Okay.”

My brows rose, and I double-checked that I’d heard her right. “Okay?”

“I’ll let you come home with me.”

Sierra

What the hellwas I doing? I was more sensible than this.

But apparently I wasn’t.

I stole a glance at Nathaniel, who was sitting in my passenger seat as if this were a normal occurrence. A part of me kept expecting him to disappear or me to wake up from this crazy dream. But he was still there, still stunning beyond belief. Of course he was—he was an actual flesh-and-blood angel.

“What happened to your wings?” I blurted out.

“They’re still there, just tucked away so I can fit in your tiny car.”

“Don’t hate on my car.”

He smirked at me as if I’d given him exactly the response he was looking for.

“How long do we do this?” I wasn’t sure what I wanted the answer to be. A part of me would have liked Nathaniel to get out of my life as soon as possible, but at the same time I knew he was probably the only reason I was alive right now.

“How long do bodyguard gigs usually last?” he asked, turning to look out the front window.

“I guess until the threat is gone.”

“Sounds about right.”

“And when will the threat be gone?”

“I don’t know.”

A ball of unease settled in the pit of my stomach. “What if it never stops?” The words tasted like acid coming out, but I had to know. If this was going to be my reality for the rest of my life, I needed to face it.

“I don’t know, Sierra.” And now he sounded annoyed. “I wish I could give you a date we could both count down to, but I don’t have one. I’m just following orders at this point.”

“Who do you take orders from?”

“Do you always ask so many questions?” he grumbled.

“No, normally when an angel I met all of a day ago moves in, I have zero concerns,” I said dryly. “You’re just special.”

He let out a long sigh. “Could we maybe save the interrogation for later?”

“When’s later?”

He shot me a bland look.

The rest of the car ride went by in silence. I was buzzing with questions that would almost certainly annoy Nathaniel. I didn’t think he’d lie to me, but I wasn’t sure how much he’d tell me. Were angels even capable of lying? He hadn’t tried to sugarcoat the truth when he told me that Hell would come for me, and he hadn’t hesitated before telling me he was an angel. Then again, he hadn’t explained the red-wings thing.

When I pulled into my parking spot beside the back door of my apartment, Nathaniel finally spoke.

“I’m going to grab my stuff. Try not to get yourself killed while I’m gone.”

I opened my mouth to answer, but he was shutting the car door and jogging off before I could make a sound. The back of his shirt was shredded and did nothing to cover his muscular shoulders. There was no sign of his wings now. It was as if they were never there.
