Sierra stood in front of her vanity, wearing nothing but a silky cream-colored nightgown.

Oh, fuck me. The hem of her nightgown stopped at her upper thighs, barely covering her ass. My dick twitched and throbbed, letting me know what he thought of Sierra’s bare legs and short skirt.

She spun away from where she’d been examining the faded bruises on her neck. “Nathaniel,” she hissed. “What are you doing?”

The neckline of her gown was trimmed in lace that dipped down between her breasts, and my gaze got a little stuck staring at the skin visible between the holes.

“I told you I needed to see with my own eyes that you were okay,” I said, dragging my eyes back up to her face.

“Well, I am. Happy?”

“Do you want to go somewhere today? Get out of the apartment for a little while?”

She folded her arms over her chest, framing her breasts and making them even more obvious than they already were.

“I know you’re from a different world, but generally it’s not considered polite to barge into a woman’s room when the door is locked.”

“I never claimed to be polite. And I promise I’ll fix the door. We can buy a new knob while we’re out.”

“It doesn’t work that way.”

I frowned. “Yes, it does. It’s an easy fix.”

“I’m not talking about the door.” She sighed, and she sounded so tired. “I’m talking about… this.” She waved a hand between the two of us.

“Explain.”

“I can’t keep up with you. One second we’re having fun, the next you act like I’m poisonous, and then you barge in here asking me to go shopping with you?”

“I’m sorry.” The words tasted strange. It wasn’t that I’d never apologized in my life, but I couldn’t remember ever apologizing to a woman who wasn’t related to me. “I don’t have an excuse besides that I’m new to this. I’ve never been anyone’s guardian before. Let me make it up to you?”

She shook her head, but it looked more like a show of exasperation than a rejection. “Get out of my room so I can get dressed.”

An hour later, Sierra pulled into the parking lot of a mall.

“Is this payback?” I asked as we got out of the car.

“Not necessarily.” She looked me up and down. “But if you’re going to keep living at my place, we’re buying you some clothes that aren’t black.”

I always wore black or occasionally gray. It went with everything and didn’t draw unnecessary attention. “And do I get any say in this?”

“Not if you want to keep taking up space on my couch.” Her smile was sweet, but the gleam in her eyes was wicked.

And I knew I was going to let her get away with it. A part of me was curious to see what she’d do next. Somewhere in the past week, she’d become fascinating to me, and I wanted to learn everything I could about her.

It was clear Sierra didn’t spend a lot of time in this mall. She window-shopped without seeming to have any direction and looked around nearly every store we entered as if she’d never been inside before. After forcing me to get several pairs of blue jeans, she loaded her arms with shirts and dragged me into a dressing room.

“You’re coming in?” I raised an eyebrow as she closed the door behind us and dumped the pile of fabric on a bench.

“I’ve seen you shirtless before, and after this morning, you really don’t have a leg to stand on.”

Just the memory of her in that nightdress had my body stirring awake, reminding me how much it had liked the sight of her in lace and silk.

“Fair point,” I gritted out, trying to force my dick into submission before she noticed.

The clothes she’d picked actually weren’t bad. There were no Hawaiian prints or rainbow colors. Most of the shirts were white, gray, or maroon. I was beginning to think she actually liked my style and just wanted to give me crap.

Following the clothes shopping, we stopped at a smoothie place and sat at one of the whole two tables in the shop to people-watch through the window.
