I wasn’t thrilled with the manipulation, but it was necessary, and Sierra didn’t seem too upset when Kylie grabbed her hands and pulled her toward the music.

“I’ll join you in a bit,” I promised her. “I need a drink before I’ll be doing any dancing.” It wasn’t a lie—Ididneed to have a drink before I could dance but not because I was self-conscious. This drink was an opportunity to talk to my brothers without the girls hearing us.

“You’re fucked,” Samuel said as soon as Sierra and Kylie were out of earshot.

“Thank you for that enlightening piece of information,” I said dryly.

“He’s right.” Joriel pushed his mostly empty glass away. “I can smell you all over her. You think a demon won’t notice that?”

“It doesn’t matter.” I grabbed Samuel’s glass and knocked back what turned out to be bourbon. “Dantalion already knows I care about her. He was going to push that advantage whether I slept with her or not.”

“It does matter. You broke the law, Nathaniel. There are going to be consequences. And what if she’s pregnant?”

A weird pulsing started in my chest when he said that. “I’ll deal with it. I’m not going to let anything happen to her or any baby she may have.”

“You don’t have that kind of power.”

“I said I’ll deal with it.” I glared at him and then turned my glare on Samuel. “Now tell me the truth. What are you two doing here?”

“Micah’s trying to protect your sorry ass,” Samuel answered. “Since you couldn’t stay in your own lane and had to debauch one of Father’s beloved humans.”

I growled, my hands clenching at my sides and my wings itching to make an appearance. “Talk about her like that one more time and my sex life will be the least of your problems.”

Samuel laughed. “Well, shit. You’ve got it bad.”

“Can we focus?” Joriel cut in. “The fact of the matter is you need us, Nathaniel. Let us deal with the demons, help you come up with a game plan for dealing with Dantalion. Stay out of the fight, lie low.”

I shook my head. “It’s pointless. Once Sierra’s no longer a target, I’ll get called back to Heaven. I’m going to have to face this at some point.”

“We can—”

“He’s right.” Samuel interrupted whatever Joriel was about to suggest. “He’s going to have to face this eventually.” He turned to me. “The law is the law. Nothing Micah or we do can protect you from judgment, but we can help you keep your girl safe from the demons. Let us do that for you.”

“In return for a favor?”

Samuel shrugged. “Would you rather be dead?”

I glanced behind me to where Sierra and Kylie were dancing. I’d promised to protect her, and I couldn’t do that if I was dead. I turned back to my brothers. “Fine.”

Samuel leaned back against the bar with a satisfied smile. Joriel looked less smug.

I smacked my credit card down on the bar. “Drinks are on me.” My attention was already solely on Sierra.

“Nathaniel.” Joriel stopped me with a hand on my arm.

“Yeah?”

“She deserves to know the truth. About everything. It’s not fair to keep her in the dark.”

I shook my head. “What she deserves is a normal life without demons or bonds with angels.”

“That ship sailed a while ago, brother,” Samuel pointed out, reaching for his second glass of bourbon.

I turned my back to both of them, weaving my way to Sierra. They had a point that a normal life was not in the cards for her. It hadn’t been from the second she stabbed Dantalion’s son. And it had only gotten worse since I came into her life. She’d already been through too much. I couldn’t bear the idea of her carrying the burden of all the things I hadn’t told her. Fair or not, I wanted to protect her from the truth of our situation.

Sierra turned when I laid my hands on her waist. She grinned up at me, and my heart squeezed in my chest. She wound her arms behind my neck, and I pulled her closer to me, my hands sliding greedily over her back and ass. Letting go of all the weeks I’d held back and resisted her, I allowed myself to hold her the way I’d wanted for longer than I was willing to admit. I was already condemned. There was nothing to hide from anymore.

Music washed over us as we moved together, clinging to each other. I couldn’t keep my hands off her, and I didn’t bother trying to resist. She leaned back in my arms, giving me an excellent view of her chest. Her eyes were closed, and her skin glistened with sweat despite the fact that she was wearing a tiny dress in late October.
