Page 31 of Dark Deviant

Instead, I got his gritty, raw, and dark alter ego…the sexy, twisted, deviant who, even with a knife to my throat, could rouse a swarm of butterflies in my belly and make me melt my insides faster than an ice pop in the sweltering summer sun.

I fly up the steps and ransack my room like a cyclone. After a quick change into leggings and a t-shirt, I grab Daniela’s diaper bag and stuff it with everything I can fit into it.

Shoes. I need shoes.

More cyclonic behavior follows until I find a pair of flip flops and slip them on. In my haste to get back to Daniela, I skid down the stairs, clutching the railing to keep from falling flat on my face. Damn those slick soles. Panting from that sudden burst of cardio, I grab her out of his arms.

“We need a car seat.”

“Not unless you want to sit in the trunk.”

I furrow my brow. “She needs to be protected—”

“Trust me, just having her next to me is protection enough.”

“How the hell are we supposed to get in touch with Larysa?” Petro yells.

“You’re not.” Danil pulls out his gun and waves it at my brothers. “Udachi.” Then he looks at me. “Means good luck in your language, yeah? Your father taught me that. And you’re all gonna need it.”

“I’m going to say goodbye to my brothers.”

“Say goodbye. If you try anything else, you know what I’ll do.”

I rush for Petro and Hadeon, pulling them in for tight hugs with Daniela. I hug Gigi, too.

“Keep saying those prayers,” I murmur in her ear.

She nods and forces a teary smile.

Danil palms his gun. “Time’s up.”

I grit my teeth and run back to the front door. “So we’re supposed to just leave, not knowing if anyone is waiting to finish the job the other guys were supposed to do?” My whisper rises in panic as we step into the balmy night air. The door to the house slams shut behind us.

We have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

“The guys who were hired to carry out that hit on you couldn’t hit a target if it landed on their faces and started to wiggle.” He draws his gun and hides it in his jacket as we walk.

“Okay, Mister Eyes Everywhere. How do you propose we do this? And where are we going, anyway? Did you take an Uber here?” A quick scan of the quiet street tells me there are no cars in plain sight.

“I wasn’t gonna park right out front. That’s bad form for an assassin.”

“Oh, silly me. So we’re going for a leisurely stroll while there might be killers just waiting to pounce on us?”

And while fear rises in my chest like a crashing wave ready to consume everything in its path, Danil laces his fingers with mine and squeezes before pulling me along next to him. “It’s gonna be okay.”

I swallow hard, my heart lodged in my throat and damn-near choking me.

“Bye-bye?” Daniela asks.

“Shh,” I whisper, giving her a quick kiss as we dart up the street. “Sleepy time.”

He rounds a corner and finally stops short in front of what looks like a cherry red toy car.

“What the fuck is this?”

“Salvation, baby.” He pulls open the passenger side door. I peer inside the tiny cabin. I already can’t breathe, I’m so claustrophobic.

I look up at him. “You aren’t serious.”
