“So when they come back a third time, what the hell are we supposed to do?” Hadeon snaps.
“Well, you said you could’ve gotten the last guy.” Danil shrugs. “So either hang onto that delusion or bend over and kiss your ass goodbye now.”
Daniela pulls away from my chest and twists her head toward Danil. “Go bye-bye?”
Danil snickers. “Yeah, he’s gonna go bye-bye for sure.”
“You are such an insufferable asshole,” I hiss through clenched teeth.
Malice flickers in his darkened gaze, like the tip of a knife blade gleaming in a sea of black. It’s not a threat but a promise. A lethal, serrated promise that I feel hovering over my flesh, ready to impale.
“The ironic twist is that I may be the only one who can spare your life and your daughter’s.”
Reality gut-punches me.
He could be right.
Besides the intrusions here, the stalker from the concert hall is still out there. Bohdan is still missing. Uncle Isai hasn’t even called with an update, which could mean he’s…fuck.Dead.
Maybe this really does have to do with me.
Or maybe that’s what these psychopaths want us all to believe.
Either way, I think I need to take my chances withthispsychopath, especially since neither of my brothers stopped the last attacker. I love them, but they’re clearly out of practice. And I have a lot to protect.
“You hate hearing that. But you know it’s true.”
“What if I give her to you and you kidnap her?” I chew my bottom lip, hating like hell to give away my biggest fear, but also needing to hear his response before I even think about leaving her.
“Fair question.” His voice is soft and sensual but eerily vindictive at the same time. Sweetness drips from the words but they lance my soul like they were dipped in poison. “I might have considered that before. But revenge is why I came here tonight. This is bigger than I thought and killing you won’t get me what I really need.”
He stops to slide the gun down the side of my cheek. I shudder as the barrel travels over my tear-streaked skin. “I think you’re the one who can lure out the fuckers who are after my family. So now, my plan to find them only works if I take you both.”
Danil slants a glare at my brothers. “Don’t worry, I’m keeping my options open. If I find out either of you had anything to do with the attack at my sister’s wedding, I will find you, saw off your fingers, your toes, and your cocks. Then I’ll skin you both with a fucking potato peeler and dissolve your sorry asses in vats of acid.”
And just as he finishes delivering a threat that literally makes me gag and vomit in my mouth, Daniela lunges for him, arms wide open. “Pick up!”
If I wasn’t afraid I’d spew my late lunch all over myself, my mouth would’ve hit the floor.
A triumphant grin lifts Danil’s lips.
“Put your fucking gun away. I don’t want her near that thing,” I say to him before casting a warning glance at Hadeon and Petro. “You guys, stay away from him. Don’t give him any excuse to hurt her.”
Danil slides the gun into his waistband. I’ve seen enough from him tonight to know that he can and will plug someone between the eyes in a hot second if he needs to, so sticking the gun into his pants won’t even be a minor speed bump in the way of him doing just that if push comes to shove.
A momentary shadow of doubt clouds his face as he holds out his arms. Daniela jumps into them like she’s known him forever.
Maybe she has…
She grips his fingers, winding her chubby ones around his. Then she looks up at him and smiles. Shock colors his expression. He narrows his eyes as he studies every inch of her face.
His eyebrows furrow the same way hers do when she’s determined to solve a problem.
And right now, he’s trying to make sense of something she’s already figured out.
My breath stills. I never in a million years thought I’d ever see this man again, much less be kidnapped by him. But yet here he is, cuddling with the baby we made that crazy, reckless night in Kiev…after threatening me with death and dismemberment.
I’d always hoped that one day I would meet my own Prince Charming.
