“Rysa,” he mumbles, his lips cracked and bleeding. His eyes droop shut. I run a hand down the front of his blood-splattered shirt.

“Don’t worry. I’ll protect us. I swear,” I murmur.

“Here’s a perfect example of someone who doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut. Do you think he’s learned his lesson?” Adrian’s black eyes narrow to slits as he moves toward us. “Haveyou, Larysa?”

“I’m here, aren’t I? I did what you said. I didn’t try to get away.”

“Maybe you’ve smartened up. Good for you. It wouldn’t be good for any of us if you show up at our final destination looking like Petro here.”

I grit my teeth. “Where are you taking us? And where the hell is my uncle?”

Adrian settles himself across from me and Petro. “You took a trip with your father before he died. Do you remember it?”

“The Bahamas.” I can barely squeak out the word.

“That’s right. And he opened up a safety deposit box in your name when you went down there. A box only you can access. Petro here is insurance that you won’t try to escape before you hand over what’s inside of that box.”

“And what about Uncle Isai?”

Adrian stabs a button, and the black partition dividing the front cabin from the rest of the truck slowly slides down.

I recoil and grip the side of the seat. My jaw drops hard like a boulder plummeting to the bottom of a lake when Uncle Isai twists his head toward me from the passenger seat. His blue eyes regard me with a chill that plunges my insides into a deep freeze. “Hello, Rysa.”

“Larysa and Petro, meet the boss of the Moroz Mafia.” Adrian grins. “And the Ivanova family’s newest business partner.”

Chapter35

Danil

Ihold up my cell phone. No bars. Tracking her doesn’t make a damn difference if I can’t see where the hell she is because of my shitty Wi-Fi signal. “Motherfucker.”

“Where’s Rysa?” Hadeon grunts, slowly shifting on the floor. He lets out a loud groan. “Fuck, that hurts.”

“Can you get up?” I peer at the wound that shredded the area right below his left shoulder.

“Yeah, I played dead so he wouldn’t come back for seconds. It’s a little flesh wound. Nothing I can’t handle.”

“You’re bleeding pretty bad. You should probably get to a hospital.”

“Screw that. My sister’s in danger. I’m coming with you.” Hadeon’s face turns a deep red as he struggles to sit up. I loop an arm around him to help. “You didn’t answer my question. What happened to Rysa?”

I grit my teeth. “He took her.”

“Where? How the hell are we gonna find her?” He claws at the side of the couch next to him and pulls himself up using me as leverage. His face flushes with color as he struggles to move.

“I stuck a GPS tracker into her pocket when we walked into the room and saw Adrian.” I grab my phone from my pocket and refresh the GPS locator app. “But my cell signal is crap down here. I can’t track Larysa. And I can’t call my sister to make sure she knows about the threat to Daniela since she and her husband are babysitting. I need to get outside.”

“I’m coming with you.” Hadeon wheezes, his face etched with pain.

“I need to move fast. And you’re gonna be dead weight.”

“Fuck you, Malikov. You let her get kidnapped in the first place. Why should I trust you to save her?”

All the bullshit Adrian spewed fell on deaf ears since I could only focus on Larysa and the gun to her head.

That sonofabitch played me. He knew I’d never take the shot.

He knew I’d always choose her.
