Eliana gave him a wide, contented smile. He looked at her, light returning to his gaze, the way it had always been.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

“What else are exes for?” He winked.

Eliana was in the middle of a childlike giggle when someone burst into the restaurant. Tao saw him first, while Eliana heard the door slam.

“ELIANA!”

She turned to see one of the men that she and Lucas had interviewed the day before standing startled, not wearing a shirt or shoes at the front of the restaurant. Everyone went silent, peering at the frenzied man who seemed to be shaken from head to toe.

“What is going on?” Tao shouted at him.

Eliana held up her hand to Tao, then rose from the booth. She walked toward the man with a gentle smile while everyone else returned to dining.

“Hi, what can I do for you?” she asked in her best customer service voice.

Lucas leaned against the counter, but she felt his alpha readiness throbbing beside her. It was romantic and thrilling.

The man looked past her and yelled, “GARTH! GARTH WANTS TO SEND A MESSAGE!”

The restaurant gasped, with Bria coming out from the back kitchen, clearly annoyed.

“What the hell is this?”

“I got it, Mom.”

“GARTH! HE WANTS TO CHALLENGE TAO AGAIN!”

The man was basically screaming, and the restaurant erupted into a chaotic chatter. Eliana moved to the man slowly to do damage control, using her gentle nature to try to soothe him.

“Hold on a second, let’s talk about this,” she nearly whispered. “Why don’t you come into the back, and we can talk about it?”

The man was frantic and about to hyperventilate. Eliana felt Lucas stand from the counter and walk over to her, his voice firm and assertive.

“What does Garth want?”

The man looked Lucas up and down, gulping. He spoke rapidly, the words leaking into each other as a slippery sentence.

“Garth wants, he wants, he wants to fight Tao. He has backup!”

Eliana knew she had lost control. Lucas set his hand on her shoulder, helping to relieve her nerves just for a moment.

“Let’s sit down, come on,” Lucas implored.

He took the man by the arm and led him into the kitchen. She mouthed thank you to him before he disappeared into the clouds of smoke.

“Everything is okay, everyone,” Eliana announced. “Let us know if you need anything else with your meals.”

Tao came to her, and they followed into the kitchen. The man was still struggling to speak but had calmed down a bit.

“Tell us as clearly as you can, what happened?”

Lucas stared at him, his eyes an intimidating glow. The man twisted his hands with worry.

“A man came to my door. He asked me where my alpha was, and I said we didn’t have one. He then said to prepare for war. That Garth is coming.”

Lucas, Tao, and Eliana exchanged glances. They were in the back room, away from the ears of the chefs and customers. Lucas looked at the man. “How do you know his threats were real? And how does he know Tao?”
