Istare at my phone, waiting to hear her voice. To hear Frank. To hear fucking anything. But after the blaring of horns, the sound of crunching metal, and Cat’s screams, there’s nothing.

“Fuck.” I punch the steering wheel as I press down on the gas.

Begging for her to speak is pointless. The phone disconnected during the accident.

At least that’s what I think it was. My gut twists. I know what McCabe’s men are like. I’ve witnessed firsthand the way they take lives. Without mercy, without hesitation, and with extreme pain.

If he hurts Cat, I won’t stop until every single person who works for him is dead.

I learned how to take a life the hard way. But after that, it only got easier. Right now, knowing that he’s put my wife in danger has me fantasizing about all the ways I could end him.

Accelerating, I don’t take a breath until I’m turning down the road that leads to my cabin. That’s when I see it.

Smoke billows from two dark cars. Frank’s tiny toy of a fucking car is sandwiched between them. The second my car is in park, I throw open my door and sprint toward the wreckage. Theding, ding, dingsound from my car, warning that the keys are in the ignition and the door has been left open, is the only sound that fills the night. As I reach the passenger side of Frank’s Aston Martin, I stumble over a body. The man is slumped on the ground, and when I lift him up, I’m met by lifeless eyes and a gunshot wound to the head.

Cursing, I drop him back to his resting place and scan the area for Frank and Cat.

They aren’t here.

I turn to the other cars for clues, and that’s when I see the man slumped over in the driver’s side of the car in the front.

It’s clear Frank took care of both men. I just hope they were the only ones here. Neither of them is his brother. Then again, I have no doubt that Evan would hide behind his men. Send them out to do his dirty work.

Though my heart rate won’t slow until I find my wife, I’m comforted knowing that Frank is with her. He’ll protect her with his life.

And knowing Evan McCabe as well as I do, I know he cares about nothing but money. He won’t hurt Cat. He’s going to try to barter her.

Smart fucking man. I’d pay anything for her safety.

A sob breaks through the night, and I run down the long path toward my cabin. As it lights up and the door opens, I catch the silhouette of Frank carrying Cat through the entry. Sprinting faster and practically flying up the stairs with a jump, I make it into the cabin as Frank is settling Cat on the small bed that sits in the center of the room. In two steps, I’m in front of her and inspecting every inch of her body.

Blood coats her forehead, and she winces when I reach for her. “Who did this to you, baby?”

Cat’s eyes fall shut, and tears stream down her face.

When she doesn’t reply, I leer in Frank’s direction. “What the fuck happened to her? Did someone touch her?”

Ignoring me, Frank shuffles to the bathroom.

I turn back to my wife. “Kitten, talk to me. Where does it hurt?” I inspect her body, checking for injuries, but her head seems to be the only thing bleeding. The cut must be hidden by her hair, which is matted and stiff.

“Her head hit the glass when they rammed us.” Frank hands me a washcloth to tend to her wounds.

With a thumb under Cat’s chin, I gently tilt her face up. “Baby, I think you’re in shock. Talk to me.”

Whiskey brown eyes full of tears dart back and forth, like she’s finally realizing I’m right in front of her. She blows out a breath, and then another sob escapes. “Jay.”

I settle next to her on the bed and pull her onto my lap, rocking her while she sobs.

“Any word from my brother?” Frank asks, his mood unaffected by Cat’s hysterics.

I suppose that’s the military training. Right now, I’m thankful for it. I, for one, am having a tough time remaining calm when my wife is shaking in my arms because she’s so goddamn scared.

I did this. Once again, I put the one person I love most in danger.

Grinding my teeth, I give a curt nod and then turn my attention back to Cat. I rock her until the quiet sobs turn to steady breathing.
