For the next hour, the group discussed the details and strategies for the retrieval mission. It seemed both parties were missing their sisters.

Hopefully, we would both get what we wanted.

Except when you play these types of games, sometimes you lose.

ChapterEight

HARLEIGH

All I knewwhen I woke up was that I needed to get out of here.

Now.

Preferably before they carried out the rest of their nefarious plan. It didn’t take a genius to figure out there were similarities between me and the other captives. They were all blonde, just like me. With them chained on the other side of the room, I couldn’t see the colour of their eyes, but I surmised it was blue.

Which meant I was likely in the hands of the cartel. There were other organizations that dealt in commodities such as these, yet I knew I wasn’t with the Bratva. Alexei was an asshole, but he wouldn’t dare take me away from his sister.

My captors spoke mainly Spanish.

The basement had no windows and the only light we had was a bulb in the middle of the ceiling. I had no clue what time of day it was because they switched the light on and off sporadically. It could have been one of those torture techniques to ensure we couldn’t keep track of the time.

There wasn’t a moment when I didn’t think about trying to escape. But until this moment, the risk was too great. The other women being held in the room were a cause for concern. First, any of them could be a plant. Second, any of them could cause a ruckus and rouse the rest of the building. Either way, I wouldn’t make it further than the top of the steps before someone struck me down.

My eyes grew heavy before I could formulate my plan.

Four less than stellar meals, and two light switches later, footsteps on the floor above woke me with a start. It had to have been at least a week since they took me and I still didn’t know where they were keeping us. This could be when they attempted to relocate me again.

I remained motionless, but alert.

That was when I heard the scuffling of boots on the crumbling cement floor.

“Okay girlie. Wake up. Come on, time to go,” an unfamiliar, accented voice whispered as he unlocked my shackles.

There was a moment when I thought about smashing my forehead into his skull. Then I reminded myself I would blindly have to get through the people upstairs. I needed to at least be able to question this guy about what was waiting for me on the other side of the door he just came through. A further issue, besides the guy in front of me, was I didn’t know what type of place I was currently being housed in. If I was going to do something, I had to at least wait until I knew more about my surroundings.

Back to the dude.

He had a gun slung over his shoulder like he was going into war.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked as I stumbled to my feet.

Never let them take you to a secondary location.

My brother’s words ran through my head over and over. It was too late though because I was already in that secondary location. Hell, for all I knew, I was already in a fifth location. Likely in another country, no less.

“To meet with your brother,” he responded.

“How do I know you’re telling the truth?”

“West is the only True North,” he responded quietly.

My brothers decided if any of us were used against the organization, we should have a plan of action. However, even with a well thought out plan, we might need to use individuals we had never met before. We thought up a safe word to use when someone we didn’t know if we could trust was assisting us to get out of the situation.

“Fine. I’ll go with you, but only because you said the right words,” I replied. “What about the girls who were here before?”

“You’re the objective,” he responded. “Besides, they’ve already taken them to another location. There’s nothing we can do about them now. We’ll have to worry about them later.”
