It was the only sign I’d been hit.

ChapterForty-Seven

HARLEIGH

With a quick stopat the clubhouse to get patched up, it was just before dawn, when we finally caught up with Jenny.

For being an old lady, she sure spent a lot of time away from the Crows’ Road Captain. He wasn’t one of the men we’d eliminated at the Crows’ clubhouse. What had surprised us even more was that she hadn’t left yet.

Maybe she needed to deal with some last affairs?

Liam traced Jenny’s cell and it was pinging off a tower in the area of an address we’d found in our background checks. Apparently she decided to hide out with one of her cousins. We never would have known to look there if it wasn’t for him. Dimitri and Hunter came with me for the task. Brax was still maintaining his double life, so he couldn’t be caught with us. A part of me still wondered if he was okay with what we had to do. After he moved into the clubhouse it was difficult to keep things away from him and the lines had started to blur.

Not that he expressly indicated he didn’t want to know.

We just all came to the conclusion that there were some things that were better left unsaid. Should he find it out organically, there was no reason not to talk about it. However, it would be easier for him to feign ignorance if he didn’t know all the ins and outs of everything we did. It probably wouldn’t be for much longer though because he still sounded adamant that he was handing in his badge after all was said and done.

We navigated the alley that ran behind their house and stopped where it ended.

Despite the fact that all the lights were off inside, I had already located the room that she was sleeping in, so it wouldn't be difficult to pinpoint her exact location. I was so disappointed that the movies had created a false expectation that I could have an infrared heat sensor which could be used to see into the house in front of me, a dream I had when I was a teenager.

Cause they didn’t fucking exist.

The walls of a house were too thick to penetrate, so we would have to go in blind.

“The stupid bitch doesn’t even have guards outside,” Dimitri mumbled, as he pulled out his night vision goggles.

Thank fuck those were real.

When we needed to do shady shit like this, it paid to have a side gig as an arms dealer. All the cool little gadgets we amassed for whatever our hearts desired. Once we were all kitted out, the three of us got out of the vehicle and approached the back fence. We crept over to the gate, careful not to make noise, and opened it slowly and silently.

We dashed through the yard, the crunch of fallen leaves and twigs muffling our movements. She either didn't understand how quickly we could catch up to her, or she believed the Crows would be enough to stop us from finding her. Hunter pulled out his lock picking kit and made quick work of the door.

Then we were inside.

The bulging suitcase at the entrance was a loud and clear indication that she was about to flee the city. We moved through the rest of the house, the plush carpet muffling the sound of our movements as we moved in perfect synchronization. Jenny was staying in one of the upstairs bedrooms, which wasn’t ideal. We crept up the stairs, the old wood creaking beneath our feet as we paused to make sure she hadn’t heard us. As the shadows created blind spots, I could feel the hairs on my neck stand up.

Dimitri and Hunter left me standing at the top of the stairs, the sound of their feet padding away echoing down the hall as they cleared the other bedrooms. Not finding anyone else, they returned to my side. We pushed open the door to Jenny’s bedroom. The sound of her gentle breathing filled the room.

Unbeknownst to her, this would be the worst mistake of her life.

To stand above a slumbering enemy felt like a powerful victory. Before she could sense our presence, we snatched her out of the bed. She let out a low moan of terror that echoed through the space before we covered her mouth with duct tape. The guys restrained her. Then Hunter carried her down the stairs, and Dimitri and I followed close behind.

We took her into the kitchen and secured her to one of the wooden chairs. I trusted Hunter and Dimitri to stand behind me and appear menacing while I interrogated her. We needed to know if this was the end, or if anything else was going to come to fruition. Next, I removed the duct tape from her mouth and took a step back.

“You know why we’re here,” I said, to which she nodded. “This should be quick, then.”

“I knew I shouldn’t have trusted boys to do a man’s job.”

“They were pretty amateurish.”

“What did you do with him?”

“Who?”

“My son.”

“You have a son?” I acted as if Larkin hadn’t already told us everything we needed to know. We had to keep safe if we wanted to be able to repay him for all the information he gave us.
