“You know I have a son, you bitch.”

“Who’s your son?”

“Dirk.”

“Don’t you mean Diederik?” I parroted.

“Am I speaking another language or something? Yes, God damn it, Diederik was my son.”

“You’re talking as if he’s dead.”

“Of course I am, you fucking bitch.” She leaned forward as far as possible in her bindings and spat at me. “I know you killed him.”

“Okay, so if you know we killed him, then could you explain what this clusterfuck was about?”

“Ever since my son saw you, he became obsessed with you. Then, when he learned that you had killed his father, he went off the rails.”

“You mean Jerry.”

“He moved to Sandstone to go to school and get to know him, but when you killed him you ruined that.”

“So the demented fuck had his father frozen and then brought him out at a random time to put in our bar?”

“He wanted revenge for you taking his father away just when he was getting to know him.”

“That still doesn’t explain why he kept stalking me. Why not just give up?”

“I don’t know,” she huffed. “The boy was besotted with you.”

“Besotted?” Who says that?

“Dirk saw you one time when you were up here and knew about Axel. He saw you fucking him in the bathroom at the bar on our surveillance cameras. I don’t know what went through his head, but from that moment, he was obsessed with you.

“He was up here for the weekend away from school and recognized you, but couldn’t figure out where from. Then you showed up in one of his classes and he put everything together. When Axel moved back there, he saw you together, and it enraged him.” She shook her head. “To make matters worse, every time he turned around, you were with another man. He thought that if they found the body, it would cause problems.”

I glanced over at Hunter and Dimitri. “I don’t see the point in drawing this out.

“Too scared about what I’m going to say?” Jenny hissed.

I turned back to her, affixed the duct tape over her mouth and said, “No matter what I ask, we’re just going to keep going around and around. I’m never going to know the real reason for everything that happened.”

“What do you want to do?” Hunter asked.

Instead of a response, I pulled the Glock out of my waist and fired a bullet right between her eyes.

“Well, I guess that’s that,” Dimitri said with a laugh.

We savedthe one person who betrayed me the most, for last.

“Don’t you think you should wash the blood off before you go over there?” Disposing of a body was messy work. Especially when you weren’t sure which of your usual places had been compromised by a stalker.

“Nope, not this time,” I responded.

Loraine deserved to see what she had a hand in.

“Wow. Okay. You just reminded me not to piss you off,” Dimitri replied. “Just remember to put plastic down on the driver’s seat. I just got the Escalade detailed.”
