“Why not?”

“I’m not ready.”

Brax grabbed my hands as I was buttoning the shirt he leant me, and pulled me into a kiss before I could finish. “I’ll give you a ride, you’re not going anywhere alone right now.”

“Not you too,” I groaned.

“But since you’re so concerned about us being together, you get to ride in the back.”

“Seriously?”

He never made me ride in the back.

ChapterTwenty-One

HARLEIGH

A month had passedsince I was taken and subsequently returned. Even though I was relatively unscathed, it was on a physical level. On an emotional level, there were so many things I tried to avoid thinking about. I tried to push everything down and hope like hell that no one noticed.

I was pretty sure I was failing.

Everyone was still treating me like a porcelain doll.

They wouldn’t let me go anywhere further than the diner unless I had someone with me. God forbid I attend a university surrounded by students and faculty. My professors had all been very understanding in allowing me to complete my assignments online, but I knew that wouldn’t last long. I needed to get back before they questioned my commitment to my education.

I was two steps from pulling my hair out from the roots.

I tossed my text book I was reading onto the pillow and crawled off the bed. When I left my room, I ignored the sound of doors opening behind me as I marched downstairs to see Erik. When I stomped into the office, Dimitri and Hunter followed close behind me, as if I was storming the gates. The moment I spotted Erik behind the desk, I instantly wanted to give him a piece of my mind.

“I’ve gotta do something besides sit in my room or go on jobs.”

“What do you have in mind?” he asked.

“I want to go back to school.”

“Are you sure you’re ready for that?” he asked. “We still haven’t found Dirk.”

“I can’t afford to miss any more of my classes this semester,” I argued. “I’m already weeks behind.”

“I thought the professors have been giving you assignments.”

I groaned. “You and I both know that can only last so long before they ask more questions.”

“Then you’re gonna take Dimitri and Hunter,” he replied. “No arguments.”

“Agreed.”

My brother sat there, speechless for a minute. When he recovered and asked, “Not even going to argue?”

“Nope!” I couldn’t wait to get out of here.

“Well, that’s a surprise,” Erik replied.

“I can be reasonable.”

I was literally going stir crazy being locked up in here.

“Yeah, on days that don’t end iny,” Hunter chimed in.
